Seeing this month's "who is hiring" post on HN, I had a fun idea to visualize the data points over the years as I expected them to be a nice visualization of the current market in tech. Earlier this year was the first month ever in which less people posted jobs than wanted to be hired 🫠

A graph showing the relation between job-seeker posts and job posts on HN per month since 2014 (seeking divided by offering). The ratio between seekers and offers was about 0.4ish for a few years, briefly peaked to about 0.9 in 2020 before dropping back down, and sharpy started rising again in 2023, with the highest ever ratio of about 1.2 last month.The graph shows two lines, one for offers and one for seekers. Job postings have noticably gone down and seekers up, with the lines crossing for the first time ever this year (more seekers than offers).

wow do i dislike coding interviews. been coding c# for 25 years. some asks me to “call a method that accepts a func” while watching me , and suddenly my brain is like “how do i even use a keyboard”

I have been socially influenced. Xteink X3 has arrived. CrossPoint Reader was really easy to install. I just need to figure out how to get Caecilia into the fonts.

I've read so many articles in the past year from developers talking about how much more productive LLMs have made them at work. You know what I can't recall a single one of them mentioning? Getting a raise because of it.

Just Brutal is really good. I don't think I've liked a first issue of a series this much since I bought a copy of Invincible #1 off the shelf in 2003.

What happens when AI replaces the parts of work people love?

We’re using AI to move faster. I’m not yet convinced we’re using it to work better.

Were 90s kids clamoring for a Batman cartoon with 1930s Art Deco aesthetics? Is that what the market demanded? Or did some really smart creative people have a vision and make a genre-defining hit that sustained 20 years of TV shows? If you want success look for vision, not just metrics.

ship something shitty fast and fix it later culture just does not produce anything great there's mountains of rationale as to why you should do that but i've never seen it work and it always turns the company into a painful place to work nothing going on right now changes this
