"We have to decide if we want to just win symbolic victories, or if we actually want to make permanent, meaningful change. If it’s the latter, then inherently, that requires us to reform and expand the Supreme Court." Full video: youtu.be/f9ZvU1CT9T0
If Democrats can reform the Supreme Court they could also: - Increase the size of the Senate with DC statehood - Increase the size of the House - Update the Voting Rights Act - Pass a federal ban on partisan congressional gerrymandering
"When Democrats retake control of the government... we have to decide if we want to win symbolic victories and simply get caught trying or if we actually want to make permanent, meaningful change. If it’s the latter, then inherently, that requires us to expand the Supreme Court.”
I do not think there is sufficient appreciation for how catastrophic yesterday’s decision in Slaughter is for this country. As Justice Sotomayor said in her dissent and she intoned from the bench yesterday, “today the majority reshapes our Govt.”
🔥 Justice Jackson calls out Clarence Thomas for his "colorblind" constitutionalism in her concurring opinion...
As we await SCOTUS decision day, two reminders: 1) If Alito or Thomas retire, it’s because they want Trump and MAGA to control the Court for decades to come. They shouldn’t have that power. We need term limits and an end to politically-times retirement decisions. (1/2)
By eliminating independent agencies in Trump v. Slaughter, the Supreme Court has handed Trump unprecedented power. Sotomayor in dissent: "The Court gives the Presdient a power unknown even to the English Crown against which the Founders revolted, elevating him above his once-coequal branches."

🚨 BREAKING: The Supreme Court will allow Alabama to use a congressional map that a federal court found intentionally discriminates against Black voters, effectively blessing racial gerrymandering.
Supreme Court greenlights Alabama’s racial gerrymander, signaling free rein for states to discriminate
The new ruling, to which all six conservative justices signed on, suggests that, in practice, almost no federal protections remain for non-white voters, even in extreme cases.

The Supreme Court should be an independent branch of government, but instead it's rubber stamping the President's authoritarian agenda. We need reform.
Day by day, we are watching the return of the Jim Crow South. We cannot be resigned to it. We must fight it.
Breaking: Louisiana Senate passes new gerrymandered map eliminating majority-Black district represented by Dem Rep Cleo Fields. African-Americans compromise 33% of state’s population but will be able to elect candidate of choice in only 1 of 6 congressional districts
Our immediate priority is to take back our Congressional majorities. But I'm also keeping an eye on the big picture: a democracy that reflects the will of the people. That means reforming SCOTUS by enforcing a code of conduct and expanding the Court to rebalance it.

In Louisiana and likely Alabama, actual, cast votes are going to be tossed out as officials speed ahead with new (or previously enjoined) maps. This is such an extreme use case for the Purcell principle that the court ignoring it here signifies that it was always a made-up toy, not law.
Sotomayor: "Alabama’s congressional primary election is next week, and vacating the District Court’s injunction will immediately replace the current map with Alabama’s 2023 Redistricting Plan until the District Court acts, even though voting has already begun."
When Utah’s Supreme Court overturned Republican attempt to redistrict they responded by expanding their state Supreme Court. The assignment for @abigailspanberger.com & VA Dems couldn’t be more clear - expand VA’s Supreme Court (in addition to passing immediate legislation to redistrict anyway).

Jeffries says everything is on the table legislatively to deal with the Supreme Court: In the new Congress, we’re going to have to do something about this Supreme Court, and let me be very clear: everything is on the table.
Everyone should be prepared for the current Supreme Court to strike down proportional representation bills (at the state or federal levels) and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act with bans on partisan gerrymandering and new pre-clearance. You need a Supreme Court management strategy too.
Lots of alternative approaches to districting. But none will work without Supreme Court reform, because the Supreme Court is highly likely to strike down proportional representation, a federal ban on partisan gerrymandering, or anything. The text of the Constitution does not matter to them, sadly.
