Keep on keeping on

Really rare to spot something like this in the wild, but The Wall Street Journal ran a "Supreme Court Expansion Is Secretly Unconstitutional Actually" column that directly refutes its thesis in the paragraph that immediately follows. Beautiful stuff. www.wsj.com/opinion/is-c...

Last week only one House Democrat, North Carolina’s Don Davis, voted for a measure to propose a constitutional amendment fixing the court’s size at nine. But it’s unclear that such an amendment is necessary. Democrats cite several precedents from the 19th century in which Congress voted to increase the number of justices. But there are no clear precedents that support a partisan court-packing plan and a strong argument that it would be an unconstitutional assault on judicial independence and the separation of powers.

Article III establishes “one Supreme Court,” and Article I mentions “the Chief Justice,” but otherwise the Constitution leaves to Congress the authority to establish the structure of the federal judiciary, including the number of justices. In the Judiciary Act of 1789, Congress created the Supreme Court with six justices.

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

This is yet another telling example of the Trump regime’s racism. There’s no pretense here of targeting criminals - the usual excuse for mass deportations. DHS is specifically encouraging Haitian “doctors, lawyers, scholars and engineers” to leave. Any decent society would value these people.

DHS encourages “doctors, lawyers, scholars and engineers” to leave with some sort of $3,000 payout, its naked racism.

We already knew Egyptian intelligence warned Israel ahead of Oct. 7 and the Netanyahu govt dismissed it. Now we learn UAE leader MBZ warned Bibi directly that Hamas was about to try something big. He dismissed that too. One of the worst security failures in history. And followed by so much awful.

Netanyahu got an explicit warning before Oct. 7. He didn't brief security chiefs

In September '23, UAE President bin Zayed called Netanyahu to deliver a harsh warning. Netanyahu did nothing. An extensive investigation, conducted for a new book, reveals the PM's failures surroundin...

I can’t wait to read the NYT op-ed from Renee Good’s wife about grief on the one year anniversary of her death. Surely the NYT will extend the same grace to Becca Good—whose partner died protesting against state power—as it has to Erica Kirk—whose partner died defending white supremacy

i present to you: today's new york times lead opinion piece. if this doesn't make you realize whose side the times is playing on, you're dense and i can't help you. they are doing free advertising for fascists. there are very few places we can turn to for propaganda-free news now

This is just to say... I have stolen the work that you spent years creating and which you were probably hoping would pay your bills But online sharing doesn't count It's actually a compliment So fuck you BTW, I'm a fan

This seems absurdly simple, but: Republicans talk *all the time* about how Democrats are bad. Not this or that individual Democrat, but the party, the ideology, the very idea of Democrats. Democrats almost never do this about Republicans. Not in a coordinated, concerted way.

Whether it’s Chuck Schumer’s daughter getting a spot on OpenAI’s board or it’s Kirsten Gillibrand’s son getting millions in backing for a crypto startup, the children of New York elites always prove that with hard work, anyone can beat the stimga of a family name by A. G. Sulzberger

If I were the chair of the DNC and a Democratic gubernatorial candidate was attacked in the critical midterm election year, I’d probably highlight the fact that Donald Trump and the right have been stoking political violence for years with conspiracy bullshit and civil war rhetoric.

I’m relieved Dr. Acton is safe and keeping those who were injured at the Canfield Fair in my prayers. Violence like this has no place in our politics.

I actually think the structure of these questions has to change (bc they will use the same dodges they always do, "I don't know what Elon means"). WHY DO YOU REFUSE to speak up against Elon's antisemitic comments? WHY DO YOU REFUSE to condemn Elon's non-consensual porn?

I'm deadly serious about this: every Republican should be shown this photo on TV and asked if they repudiate/reject/renounce Musk. And if not, why not.

The open secret to pedagogy research is that small class sizes/maximizing educator attention per pupil is the simplest, most effective, and unfortunately the least attractive to administration thing you can do to improve learning outcomes.

We know how to teach books in the age of AI: small classes, close reading, research-engaged learning (which is how you ’let students see you struggle’). The issue is nobody will hire and pay the requisite # of faculty to offer this.
