Great to be with @swaempls.bsky.social today; reflecting on 2025 and looking ahead to the rest of 2026; everyone was so deeply involved in responding to the surge; I’m so proud of everyone’s work; I also noticed how reflecting on it brings up so many feelings, still lots of healing work to be done

To be clear: LA County has declared a state of emergency BECAUSE OF the federal government. The Feds, LA County is (correctly) saying, have CAUSED the emergency. This is a striking political moment of internal collapse. Local govts feeling compelled to protect their ppl from … their own govt.

🚨NEW: Erez Reuveni, the DOJ lawyer fired for his honesty in the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case, sends Congress a whistleblower letter detailing lawlessness at the DOJ around the CECOT deportations. He says Emil Bove told the DOJ to respond to likely court orders blocking flights with "fuck you."

Bove then made a remark concerning the possibility that a court order would enjoin those removals before they could be effectuated. Bove stated that DOJ would need to consider telling the courts "fuck you” and ignore any such court order. Mr. Reuveni perceived that others in the room looked stunned, and he observed awkward, nervous glances among people in the room. Silence overtook the room. Mr. Reuveni and others were quickly ushered out of the room. Notwithstanding Bove's directive, Mr. Reuveni left the meeting understanding that DOJ would tell DHS to follow all court orders.21 - Mr. Reuveni was stunned by Bove's statement because, to Mr. Reuveni's knowledge, no one in DOJ leadership - in any Administration – had ever suggested the Department ofJustice could blatantly ignore court orders, especially with a "fuck you.” Mr. Reuveni was in disbelief, because, on the contrary, the Department of Justice consistently advises its clients of their obligation to follow court orders, not to ignore them. Mr. Reuveni knew that it was absurd and unlawful to do otherwise, a proposition that Mr. Reuveni felt even more certain of after a brief conversation with his supervisor, August Flentje, shortly after the meeting.

We gotta find better ways to describe these arrests, man. "Detained" ain't cutting it. Getting your car window busted out and getting dragged away isn't "detained." Getting stopped on the street and disappeared for writing an OpEd isn't getting "detained." The language needs to match the action here

Had missed this story in the Miami Herald about a man that already been granted refugee status being removed under the Alien Enemies Act declaration to CECOT. The other identified removals I'd heard of were undocumented or asylum seekers, first I'm hearing of approved refugees being targeted

This is absolutely catastrophic and an enormous betrayal. Undocumented folks have been promised that this info-sharing b/w IRS and DHS wouldn’t occur so that they would pay taxes to a state that offers them nothing in return. Now they will be rewarded with deportation.

Wow! These are conditions that in the past decade we have seen inside border patrol detention facilities. But with the administration ramping up arrests, and ratcheting down releases, this level of overcrowding is becoming more common in the interior. These conditions are completely illegal.
