I 100% have not changed a single goddamn thing about how I write here in the age of "AI." I write how I write. If the "AI" writes anything like how I write, it's because it stole from me. I'm gonna use any punctuation I like, and if it looks "AI"ish to you, you can go fuck yourself.

Authors and journalists are doing more first-person (hello 2010s blogging) and embracing "mistakes" in writing to prove they're not chatbots. There's even an “anti-Grammarly" app that leaves in typos and signs off "sent from my iPhone" to create more authenticity: www.wired.com/story/more-t...

Appreciate that this touches on how awful MTPE (machine translation post-editing) is, and glad that there are still some companies who refuse to use it. Also, reminder that contractors are far more likely to get shafted in the credits, either being reduced to a company name or nothing at all.

Thousands of full-time video game industry workers have been laid off in the last several years as game companies scramble to cut costs. But there are even more cuts happening quietly to contract workers, wh... https://kotaku.com/amidst-mass-layoffs-contract-workers-devastated-video-games-2000718416

Anime is great for practicing Japanese listening, but the subtitles aren't made for learners. And just because they're not direct translations, doesn't mean they're wrong. They tell you what the characters are saying, not the words that come out of their mouth. That's a big distinction in Japanese.

Friends, #weebwednesday is upon us once again! You know the drill - quote-post with your weebiest hot takes, nothing racist, nothing intentionally inflammatory, have fun with it ♥

nice holystone from baccano, a woman with blonde hair and an eyepatch under her glasses, with scarring all across her face and arms. she is wearing a red vest and is smiling

Procrastinated by rearranging my manga shelves. I used to a strictly organize alphabetically, but I threw caution to the wind and did it by vibes. Sorta alphabetical at the top, then a Splatoon goodies shelf, then all my Natsuki Takaya books, Madoka, Original, Spiral, and Orange b/c they fit well--

If we actually want to appreciate moms, we should be providing free childcare, healthcare, and guaranteed income for stay-at-home parents to put more money in families’ pockets and ensure no SAHP is reliant on a partner for their economic security. Idk I think that’s better than 15% off a vacuum.

capitalism as a whole is just this massive roiling scam that rewards people who sell their peers out without any trouble. The less community and trust you have, the easier that is, the more you're rewarded it's why white supremacy and capitalism are inextricable

will never not be crazy to me that anita sarkeesian made critiques that were mild for 2012 feminism and Gamers still haven't gotten over it 14 fucking years later

Freelance translators (because they're almost always freelance and never in-house) don't have the luxury of being able to defend themselves and stop these decisions to use slop instead of humans. They need people on the inside to step up and say "this won't actually benefit the game or sales."

More and more I see people say "it's ONLY used for translation" when it comes to genAI in games. As if the act of writing into another language is not worth respecting. As if people in other countries (both gamers and workers) don't matter at all. Translation IS writing. Translation IS art.

On this International Workers' Day, stand against executives pushing LLM usage (aka AI--we all know it's not actually artificial intelligence) while laying off workers and eliminating jobs.

This is coming from a place of warmth and acceptance… -It’s ‘sleight of hand’ -It’s ‘bated breath’ -It’s ‘lo and behold’ -It’s ‘one fell swoop’ -It’s ‘brass tacks’ -It’s ‘free rein’

This is one of many reasons why I'm so against people relying on LLMs to make things for them. *YOU* need the practice of finishing projects on your own. They don't have to be perfect. Done is better than some weird aspirational view of delivering something utterly perfect.

creators get better by finishing projects no project ever comes out as good as it is in your imagination but that’s ok, the next one will be better also it’s ok if projects fail, taking risks and big swings is an important part of growing as a creator

“GlobalComix’s AI translation copilot delivers 85–90% cost savings compared to industry-standard manual translation.” These AI tools will always rely on underpaid freelancers doing three jobs for a fraction of the wage of one. They’re merely a justification for not paying people.

So I was in that Global Comix Discord meeting awhile back where they said, checks notes, we won’t use AI for translating. Well… Sorry to repost a Substack article but here’s the full icky details 👇🏻 leadvc.substack.com/p/1b903618-4...
