There’s something almost transcendental about the ‘holy huddle’ at priestly ordinations. Just an unbroken chain of screwballs who heard a whispered call in the soul’s night and couldn’t resist answering. 🕯️

It feels very surreal to be flying into the NYC metropolitan area on this significant anniversary of September 11th.
Honouring all those lost on 9/11 25 years ago, including Fr. Mychal Judge, FDNY chaplain, the first recorded victim, who gave his life offering hope and prayers amid the tragedy. His courage and compassion remind us to serve others selflessly, even in the darkest moments. #NeverForget
MSP ➡️ EWR to celebrate @kingasa.bsky.social being instituted as 12th Rector of Grace Church, Nutley, NJ and then to NYC to join the Lord Bishop of New York in laying hands on @ancientspeak.bsky.social and @danielbentley.bsky.social and making them priests. A truly terrible weekend for Ol’ Scratch! 🕯️
“The way that trans people are being treated in this world, in this culture, in this country, it is one of the many things that keeps me up at night. It’s contrary to the gospel. It’s a scandal to the heart of God.” —Episcopal Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe ⚓️ episcopalnewsservice.org/2026/09/08/f...
Leaving my non-church choir rehearsal tonight and somebody said “Nice to meet you, see you in church!” My heart was strangely warmed. 🕯️
The last time my grandma stayed at my apartment, she surreptitiously turned the thermostat to 78°F. I think I was subtle in my messaging this time around.
I take 5 psychic damage every time I say the contemporary Our Father.
My parish hosted the local Jewish community (mostly from the two colleges) tonight for Shabbat services in our fireside room and a potluck afterward in the parish hall. The campus rabbi grew up in an interfaith home (her dad is an Episcopalian) and so this kind of thing comes naturally to her. 🕯️
Elizabeth is a college friend of mine! I’m extremely proud of her and profoundly disappointed (as ever) to live in a country which would arrest a pregnant minister for standing up for the marginalized. 🕯️
Relatedly, the Vermont state police have posted the mug shots of those arrested while protesting, which include them wearing their collars and stoles. vtstatepolice.blogspot.com/2026/09/vsp-...
The Roman Catholic archbishop of Indianapolis has dispensed the Sunday mass obligation for those afraid of detention or intimidation by ICE. What a profoundly messed up world we live in! 🕯️
bank account-wise, it sucks for me that the best and most satisfying breakfast food is just Eggs Someone Else Cooked
I really wish people didn’t have such easy access to guns in this country.
Free flu shots at the Minnesota State Fair is a true victory for public health.
The church dining halls are the best—and most underrated—part of the Minnesota State Fair. There’s nothing like ham loaf, roasted spuds, and fluff salad being served by very friendly Methodists.
Three of my favorite poems by Wendell Berry from the POETRY journal (January 2001, June 1967, and November 1971 respectively.) 🕯️
Today’s thrift store haul: three pairs of Callaway golf shorts with the tags still on! $86 a piece from the Callaway website, $8, $8, and $6 at the thrift store.
oh is prince harry returning to england? the same year we've got a tyrant beefing with the Pope? STOP MAKING MEDIEVALISTS RELEVANT
Today in Priestcraft: a teen from the parish left for college first thing this morning (for my alma mater, go CSB+SJU!), so the youth group threw her a doughnut-and-coffee farewell party in her driveway. Yours truly was up at 0-dark-thirty to fetch the goods from KwikTrip and Caribou. 🕯️
I sent this bit from Mother Julian’s Shewings to a parishioner and thought you all could stand to see it as well. 🕯️
Absolutely cannot stand interpretations of this week's Gospel that say Jesus calling the Canaanite woman a dog is an example of his "human side" bc he's so exhausted/irritated/overwhelmed that he cannot help but be racist to her. If Jesus is indeed without sin, that should include the sin of racism!
I dreamt last night that the Rt Rev’d the Bishop of Washington and I went to see a MUNA house concert. Everybody was sitting in arm chairs and couches (except for Her Lordship, who was obviously sitting in her cathedra.) It was a wild dream! 🕯️
(make Julien Baker a bishop, etc etc)
Pro tip: people who have efficient means of killing large numbers of people in a hurry are never the good guys
Honestly, if you want intergenerational community, public service, ritual, morality, a framework to make sense of evil, injustice, suffering and mortality, a place where people visit each other in the hospital — you could do a lot worse than walking into a church, synagogue, mosque or temple.
There’s just about nothing better than the crunch of a very crisp green grape.
I just sent an email to a colleague that was no body, only a single sentence in the subject line. Am I becoming somebody's great-uncle?!
