any time i get to look at a group of christians and go 'you people are all basically the same right' i immediately leap at the opportunity. methodism is basically the same thing as russian orthodoxy, right? both of them have bishops!

we really really need to interrogate that term "the real world" - both in academia and ecclesial settings
A consistently pernicious framing of student experience is that they are not in the “real world” yet, as if the debt they’re accruing and incessant punitive surveillance of their labor and speech isn’t entirely of a piece with the broader cultural moment.
God is strategically incarnated in every realm as the being best equipped to spread the truth of the Gospel to the locals, hence a talking lion in Narnia or a homeless Jewish rabbi here on earth. Father Christmas is just a guy.
I think the wider theological question would be "why is Father Christmas consistent between realms but the savior takes different forms"
oh, mine was DEFINITELY the ending of Raiders of the Lost Ark
Indiana Jones last crusade - drinking from the wrong grail.
I was so bummed that I had caught up on all my current favorites on Jump that I went exploring and found, like, five new (and current) series that I really enjoy - but the BEST ONE is the one about two brothers who run a barbershop in a run-down shopping area & the beef they have w/ a local landlord
anybody else preaching "on Skubala" this morning???
here's the bell tent we bought! I'm so pumped about it
help help, I was listening to Shostakovich while working on my sermon tonight, but then I shifted to Holst's Planets, and now my work is done, but I can't turn The Planets off
I won't lie, there's real benefit in being a White Midwestern (Mainline) Pastor when it comes to helping some folks de-radicalize. Sometimes folks will say absolute nutcase stuff in my presence, and I'll go, "well, man, in the Bible, Jesus says..." and they go "oh."
The Most Midwestern White Pastor Alive is not going to bring transgender sharia communism to Dodge City and you are never convincing a normal person he will, even if you can get them to vote against him in the end
It’s bad when the old robber barons like Carnegie appear enlightened AF arguing for the educated working class decades ahead of these jag offs.
some of these folks didn't grow up in a community of coal miners and it shows, NGL
I was raised by a nurse with an associates degree and a steel mill electrician. I am not denigrating the value and dignity of blue collar work when I ask how many elite national media staffers are raising future bricklayers themselves. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
due to budgetary concerns, we've decided to once again plan a CAMPING TRIP as a family vacation, but this time we've upped the ante because we're buying a BIG TENT - photos to come (after next weekend)
"I'm a College Professor. Thinking is Overrated." same energy
Just a reminder that you can have a PhD and also be an idiot
I'm reviewing, briefly, what all I've read so far in 2026, and I am *almost* back up to the form I had circa 2015-2021. It turns out that one of the best ways to kill your reading habit is to *become an English teacher*; the fact that my worst years of reading were the four that I taught is... bad!
I'm doing my prep for this Acts study I've been leading, and Willie Jennings' comments on the idolatry of the Couple (and on Marriage) more generally in his (incredible, I must emphasize) Acts commentary are absolutely phenomenal - really worth reading (it's pp. 57-61).
in the past month or so there's been a few recurring visitors who have begun shifting toward becoming regular worshipers with us, and they have been so encouraging to me regarding my preaching, specifically, which is really cool cause self-evaluating your preaching is the hardest part of this job?
Here’s the most incredible story you’ll read today. A small plane with four people aboard crashes in a field. Another pilot witnesses it. That pilot happens to be flying a bunch of skydivers. They offer to jump to assist, are given permission. The skydivers happen to be EMTs. Everyone survives.
Skydivers alert emergency crews, assist after plane crashes near East Troy airport
Four people were aboard the single-engine plane when it went down in a cornfield near Carvers School Road in East Troy at about 1:30 p.m.

Joe Biden's inability to talk about his administration's successes ended up being a really big problem, imo.
The actual deal with Mamdani is that *leftists are emotionally invested in Mamdani's success* so when he does very banal incremental things they get happy while when the Biden administration did much bigger things they didn't care. But you can just open your heart to meliorism in general.
it is no surprise that I aspire to eventually complete a Ph.D. program - but, of course, the traditional residential Ph.D. with grad assistantships, etc., is not compatible with my current mode-of-life, and I'm very happy about my work as a pastor!, so I have no intentions of changing that -
ran into a former student from my Rhetoric class last night: he's working on a project engaging with the spiritual and secular ethics of Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game series, and he asked me for reco's on Mormon ethics, and somewhere along the way I may have said "you gotta watch TWILIGHT"
It’s like I am always saying: other people are real! Children are people!
I do this without tech. It’s called “not being an asshole.”
Just go to therapy, bro.
A truly wonderful LP. A gospel record showing Coltrane's spirituality or search for spirituality.
John Coltrane's Centennial comes on September 23. I'll be listening to at least one Coltrane track each day of the month. #Trane100 Let's begin with "A Love Supreme, Pt. 1", released in 1965. McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMCH...
update: the children's library (shelf) was counted, so we have (minimally) 1308 books in our home library, plus however many are in my office (I feel afraid to count that), plus the boxes that remain in storage and are unshelved
that means that our house contains ~1000 books in it
we did an impromptu audit of our bookshelves this morning, and the preliminary count - not including the dedicated children's library - has our (home) libraries at: me: 594 H.: 220 kid #1: 213 kid #2: 59 (kid #3 doesn't have his own shelf yet, and they all share the children's library)
my eldest (10yo) was asking me about getting his own music player, and so I shared with him that my first three CDs I played nonstop were the LOTR:FOTR soundtrack, Dark Side of the Moon, and The Who Ultimate Collection meanwhile, he's imagining like... ... all jazz, nothing but jazz on his playlist
First of all, Ian can do all things through Christ who strengthens him, so jot that down
oh, folks out here re-creating millenarian fertility cults from first principles
I'm back, I missed you all. Since this is an important subject I know too much about, here's a 🧵 explaining that AI Safety Is Mostly A Sex Cult. I don't think these people should make policy. (1/?) (alternative title: Time For Some Cult Theory)
