Warner Bros attempted to do an entire $90 million film non-union in the US by “subcontracting” every single job to a single company. So IATSE went out and unionized the whole damn thing.

He's credited by Japan's cultural historians as having personally saved enormous amounts of folklore from being completely lost, too. Hundreds of yokai legends are only known now because he collected them from remote communities that are themseles often gone.
