To the Old Gods
by Edwin Muir

Old gods and goddesses who have lived so long
Through time and never found eternity,
Fettered by wasting wood and hollowing hill,

You should have fled our ever-dying song,
The mound, the well, and the green trysting tree.
They have forgotten, yet you linger still.

Goddess of caverned breast and channeled brow,
And cheeks slow hollowed by millennial tears,
Forests of autumn fading in your eyes,

Eternity marvels at your counted years
And kingdoms lost in time, and wonders how
There could be thoughts so bountiful and wise

As yours beneath the ever-breaking bough
And vast compassion curving like the skies. An early Iron Age wooden carved figure of a woman or girl, standing in front of a wall of woven twigs and branches. The figure is blackened with age, and the wood has twisted and elongated due to the lack of proper preservation when it was discovered in a peatbog in 1880. Carved from a single block of alder, at the time of its discovery it stood 1.4 metres tall (just under 5 feet). The figure has a large, heavy head with inset quartz pebbles for eyes, large ears, a distinct nose and mouth and a round chin.

Who were the old Gods of the British Isles? What is the Pagan Calendar and how is modern Halloween derived from it? What can we learn from the mysterious ‘bog bodies’? linktr.ee/empirepoduk

I’ve been saying “there was no sex, and the food looked terrible” when actually the quote is (i checked): “There are no sex scenes, and all the food looks horrible.” Thus illustrating the continuing power of oral transmission/experimentation/revision in a culture seemingly dominated by writing etc

I have not been good at social media since the demise of twitter (RIP), but thought I should come on to say that I am open for queries until end of August.  I am open to most fiction genres (do check our website) so this is not to restrict, but to do a little #mswl (below).

One of the best things you can do for an author is check their book out of the library. If your library doesn't have the title, requesting it is also great! Never apologize. The library bought the book! Sometimes more than one! Because of you!

Never ever apologize for getting someone's book from the library. A lot of them were written by authors who themselves first read a lot of other books in a library

It'll be so interesting to see the impact of this in later years beyond the goal of increasing literary rates. Will it spark a surge in fantasy fans? Will kids of this age have a unique, shared nostalgia for the book when they get older? 800k copies!!

Every year 6 and P6 child in the UK will be given Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell this Christmas, as part of a new initiative by Queen Camilla in partnership with the National Literacy Trust, called The Queen's Christmas Present 👇

Recently visited Arran for a friend's wedding. No time to climb Goatfell (one of my fav 🏔️) but there was plenty of sun, food & reading. I read Female, Nude by Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett over the course of the trip and I really enjoyed the depiction of class & creative industries. Hmu with similar recs!

I am reading my kindle on an Arran beach, holding it up. My legs are in the frame and beyond there is a rocky, sandy beach and the sparkling waterA kindle is next to a glass of white wine on a table outdoors. The sun is setting, and the sky is a gloriously gentle mix of orange and light blue.

thirty more minutes... In the meantime here's an advertisement break. "BUY BOOKS FROM BIG GREEN BOOKS!" I've heard good things about them. They only have a few books listed on their website, but they can get over half a million titles! Email biggreenbooks@gmail.com Or DM them on here!
