The shadow lies upon his tomb In Moria, in Khazad-dûm But still the sunken stars appear In dark and windless Mirrormere There lies his crown in water deep Til' Durin wakes again from sleep
So video games to have embargo hit and a bunch of reviews drop where all the quotes are about how much of a mess the game is and all the scores are 3/5

Or your local library's problem! Trash em!
Gentle reminder for all that if you have books that are water damaged, crawling with bugs, physically broken, or giving you travel advice for a country that hasn’t existed since the 90s, you can safely throw them away, you don’t need to make them your local thrift store’s problem.

I fucking love this. Christopher Nolan has done exactly what a blockbuster director should do, and Emily Wilson is doing exactly what a classics academic should do. Top marks all round!
I cannot rest from discourse. I will see that film again tomorrow. I will drink life to the lees. Again I will enjoy greatly, will suffer greatly, both with those that love me, and in Pleasantville NY. I am become a meme. Film showing: burnsfilmcenter.org/booking/the-...
‘She herself is a haunted house. She does not possess herself; her ancestors sometimes come and peer out of the windows of her eyes and that is very frightening.’ ~ Angela Carter, The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories #SpookySunday 🖼️ Elizabeth Shippen Green Elliott, 1902.
I think the millennial fear of damaging someone’s employability via metrics has made reviewing anything honestly extremely difficult; similar to how folks in LA couch their language we cannot give negative feedback in case it is used against them (and sometimes us)
RE: the whole Odyssey negative review thing, it's worth reading Simon Parkin's excellent feature about the general trend against scathing reviews through the lens of restaurant criticism. observer.co.uk/style/featur...

The critic’s worst corruption is a desire to keep the readers happy, praising movies the mass audience is going to love, like TWISTER or INDEPENDENCE DAY. (1998)
criticism discourse got me thinking about how many game critics have muffled totally reasonable, articulate critiques about tons of things around the game space because they don't want to be perceived as piling onto someone or something who might have been a harassment target of right wing gamers
Joy Malignant just came out, only spent a little bit of time with the demo but man this one looks weird and cool.... bizarre, unsettling vibes. Frankenstein in Town-On-Gorkhon?

George Chapman was calling a critic of his Homer an "envious Windfucker" in the early 17th century
lmao no it is not. It just isn't. It is fully within the norm for a negative review where the writer feels strongly. This is Roger Ebert.
Too many people in this space ultimately only care about their ability to play games. Their entire ideology is based on the premise that games are some right accorded to them. When that's your most core belief, nothing serious can be built on top of it.
I’ve seen peers completely ignore BDS while championing the “power of the PlayStation Boycott” in the same breath recently. Frankly, I’ve just so little respect for these people. Why is it a race to be the most unserious person imaginable lately?
Just saw Hadestown uhhhhhhhhhhhhh can someone please animate that walk cycle
It truly is extraordinary to watch how any accusation of rape or sexual assault immediately is treated by our culture as an event requiring the protection, not of the victim's safety, but of the accused's reputation. Every accusation enters a workflow designed to negate the impact of the accusation.
I’m glad that the walls seem to be closing in on Andrew Tate, but it took criminal investigations across three countries, dozens of outspoken victims, and a hit TV show implying he drives boys to murder girls for this to happen—and he still hasn’t been convicted yet. This is why 98% get away with it

there is literally no amount of caveats or careful wording that will protect you from stupidity or bad faith, so you might as well say things straightforwardly and strongly to begin with.
