unbelievably excited to see this from @hyl.st, it’s a foreshadowing of where interop across the atmosphere is heading.
What do y'all reckon? Let's interop some more? Coming soon to a Ream near you!
Accessibility is design friction because it requires you to think about adding additional surfaces and greebles for people to hold on to (braille, alt-text, ARIA, hand-rails, ramps, translations, etc) instead of filing them down to nothing
I'm on an unreasonable anti-design-thinking rampage, pick your faction
Ralph Lawson just dropped an unreleased Daft Punk mix prior to when Homework was released thats been sitting in a box unplayed for the last 30 years.

This mix was sent for me to play as a guest mix on my radio show Trans Europe Express on KISS FM 105 in Feb '97 as promo for their first album Homework. It's quite possible it was sent to other statio

The PDS's account management page is severely undercooked and illegible to end-users, compared to how important one's atproto account might become... but it does exist (e.g. bsky.social/account). What @archivistmoth.bsky.social suggests is much needed functionality.

I have a tiny critique of many of the AT protocol apps I've been using lately and would love to see a new standard practice adopted in the community. Let's start being very forward what gets added to a user's PDS. published-drafts.leaflet.pub/3myzqetuwb22z
There's a wonderful piece by Stuart B. Ewen called "Advertising as Social Production" that touches where this emerged before it was weaved into hypermodernity (e.g. the Steve Jobs' sales pitch) and now technofascism. repository.library.brown.edu/studio/item/...
One of the political bets of tech—of social media, AI, the financialization-of-everything, disinfo & bots, alt-media, and lately betting markets—is you can create an "overlayer reality" that is as a shared collective belief of the world that has more power than other ways of collective belief.
An updates on the atmosphere community proposals I'm stewarding: - at-tags is about to hit 1.0. @essentialrandom.bsky.social started a thread about any final feedback/changes. - a lexicon for user-defined collections - a proposal for opening AT URIs
Drag-and-drop makes the digital graspable, but building it well is fiddly enough that many don’t bother. Declarative Dragging (with @disconcision.com & @jheer.org, #uist2026 best paper award), lets you make an element draggable just by listing the states dragging it can reach.
one thing in the current atproto landscape that worries me a bit is how much (particularly post-oauth) a lot of the ecosystem is starting to build around or assuming patterns where we dont draw a distinction between clients/user-agents vs the rest of an application and where the application backend
I think there could be a genuine use case for PDS proxying and modifying requests lurking with app preferences.

progressive enhancement is dead, long live javascript fatigue. 🙏🏻
disabling javascript for two days has been a humbling experience, the atmosphere is actually just the javascriptmosphere
Literal case in point, this is just a guy vibing a million lines of code over the last week to rebuild Jira and Salesforce.
OccupySaaS — They laid us off. We're rebuilding their SaaS.

I've yet to see much discourse about the way agentic coding seems to reinforce the troupe of the solo hacker/developer, who can take on the world all by themself. The form factor of programming already nudges us in the direction isolated work...
App stores always seemed at odds with internet scale, to me. The curated approach only ever worked through pretty extreme top-down control and denying lots of good stuff. I find it helpful to shift mindset toward search and ranking over an open ecosystem (with all the mess that openness implies).
The thing is that AI slop flooding storefronts is fundamentally a hard problem. I'd personally call it one of the hardest moderation problems on the modern internet
Two qualities that elaborate on this: - folkification - theseous
we already have malleable software, software you can beat into shape with a hammer. what's missing is soft software, repairable software, I can put my hands into the pool of plasma and squishy squishy software, wirey bits and pieces chunks and lumps and parts of things and scissor snip and sellotape
Implicit in this piece by @paperpilot.dev is that same-origin paradigm is technically and culturally a limiting factor to how we can collectively rewild the internet. To reimagine the internet is to restructure it beyond the origin.

My fall 2026 "atmosphere for layfolk" update: PDS (repo) -> Internet Account PDS (host) -> Account Service Provider Appview -> Content Service DID -> Internet phone number Record/Lexicon -> file/file type
Given the response we’ve seen to Dan’s essay, I feel more confident in this metaphor. But I feel dissonance stemming from atproto terminology – PDS, lexicons, repos, records, collections, and app views are coined by developers, for developers.
“I don’t need accessibility,” says the tech bro, dictating instructions to his agent by voice. “We can’t prioritize accessibility right now,” says another, while his agent completes his tasks by reading the accessibility tree.
This talk by @anildash.com has no title, I would have call it "A remembering forward of the internet".

Thanks to everyone who dropped in, the initial feedback and suggestions have shaped the proposal quite nicely!
What do music playlists, bookmarks, photo albums, pinned locations on maps all have in common? Well, they are all types of user-curated collections. So I've written a proposal for a lexicon that handles heterogenous collections of *things*.

new project coming soon – cursor galleries – display your friends artwork as a (micro)gallery on your personal website, powered by atproto of course!
A best practice in the atmosphere I’d like to see is for this to become an orderable list with automatic fallback instead of selecting a single index. No reason we cant make this experience seamlessly resistant.
Bluesky seem to have had some problems this morning, our Eurosky infrastructure has been operating as normal. On @mu.social go to settings -> networks services -> content service and select ‘Eurosky’. Remember this next time you get an error :)

highly recommend to @chaosgreml.in's reading this wonderful piece about building coalition
Thanks so much to @rpg.actor for joining me for my read of "Coalition Politics: Turning the Century"! I hope you'll watch the video, because I think this message is crucial for folks on here to listen to & learn from if we are to try & make the open social web something durable & transformative.
