My most unhinged cooking hack is that when I make soup with winter squash I just throw the seeds in the pot with everything else. No comment on whether this is still a good idea if you blend your soup, I am obviously not an extra steps kind of girl.

Things I was frightened of as a child: 1. Not getting to the bottom of the stairs before the loo finished flushing. 2. Falling into a thorn bush and being blinded. 3. The granny with all the pills on her dresser who made me margarine sandwiches. 4. The dark country lane where Mrs Kelly lived.

Our society's unfathomable cruelty to homeless people is not just morally unjustifiable, but more expensive than housing people would be. Cruelty against the homeless is an unaffordable luxury. Abandoning homeless people to avoid offending the Protestant work ethic is an unaffordable luxury.

ProPublica spoke to dozens of people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.” We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words. ➡️ This is what they wrote:

Handwritten notecard. Prompt at the top asks: What object was most devastating for you to lose, and how have you been coping? Answer below: Dentures. Were thrown away and coping isn't somthing I can do. It’s made me feel ugly, unworthy, can’t go get a job with no teeth. So how can get off the streets until another pair can be made?

I've been thinking a bit, recently, about people I've known in my own life who have passed away, but who left a bounty of love and art and generosity behind. There's a kind of joy to mourning a life so well-lived. & I think Dolly Parton was that for millions of people which is kind of incredible

The existence of a now-famous fictional cat called Princess Donut has me feeling a little self-conscious about having named the cat in my musical "Out of the Bag" Princess Sashimi. Ultimately tho, I guess Matt D and I are poking fun at the same naming convention. And the cats are very different
