A community solar project for nuns. An all-electric affordable housing complex. Inexpensive loans for rooftop solar and energy efficiency. These are just a few projects green banks have managed to get done despite Trump’s funding clawbacks.

With scaled-back plans, green banks navigate Trump’s funding freeze

Green banks enabled $12.4 billion in hard-to-finance clean energy and climate projects in 2024 and 2025. But they had to scramble to make up for lost…

Outside of the #Antarctic, temperatures have been above average for nearly all areas of our planet in the last three months. This is clear when looking at each latitude band. [Plot shows zonal-mean surface air temperature anomalies, where latitude = y-axis (not scaled by distance). Data: GISTEMPv4]

Bar graph showing zonal mean surface air temperature anomalies for the period of July 2026 to September 2026. Most all latitude bands, except the Antarctic, observed above average temperature anomalies, especially in the Northern Hemisphere.

The NOAA National Hurricane Center has just issued a Tropical Storm Watch part coastal Southern California, including city/county of San Diego. This is only second time such a product has ever been issued for any part of California (TS Hilary in 2023 was other instance). #CAwx

Friday ice update - #Arctic sea ice extent is currently the 16th lowest on record (JAXA data) • about 420,000 km² above the 2010s mean • about 860,000 km² below the 2000s mean • about 1,960,000 km² below the 1990s mean • about 2,610,000 km² below the 1980s mean More: zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-i...

Line graph time series of 2026's daily Arctic sea ice extent compared to decadal averages from the 1980s to the 2010s. The decadal averages are shown with different colored lines with purple for the 1980s, blue for the 1990s, green for the 2000s, and white for the 2010s. Thin white lines are also shown for each year from 2000 to 2025. 2026 is shown with a thick gold line. There is a long-term decreasing trend in ice extent for every day of the year shown on this graph between September and November by looking at the decadal average line positions.

A wide range of potential impacts is possible in SoCal, mainly from Orange/San Diego counties south & east, on Sun. There is, however, a growing risk of some notably strong/gusty winds--& ECMWF ensemble now indicates a ~50% chance of wind gusts over 50mph in San Diego. #CAwx

Plot showing ECMWF ensemble maximum wind gusts for a point near the San Diego Airport. At present, nearly 50% of members indicate wind gusts over 50 mph associated with Tropical Storm Rachel.

I have finally found an acceptable hotel wifi connection, and will have a short-notice livestream at Noon Pacific Time today (Oct 9) on Tropical Storm Rachel and the growing potential for significant Southern California impacts this weekend. #CAwx
