Sipping my coffee ☕️ and thinking about these marvellous Minoan cups! They look so modern it’s incredible to think they were made by Bronze Age potters some 3,800 years ago! Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Crete. 📷 by me #Archaeology

My photo collage shows five cylindrical Minoan cups each with a single handle and a slightly flaring rim. Each cup is decorated with a different geometric polychrome motif as follows: Top left: on a black background, a central band delineated by an upper and lower white line contains evenly-spaced dark-orange circles. Each orange circle is outlined by a white line. Above and below the central band are swirling white vine-like lines. Top right: on a black background, a large white spiral on the front of the cup and beside it a dark-orange oval with stylised white petals at each end which looks like a wrapped sweet! Middle left: a central band of white and dark orange diagonal lines runs around the cup. Above and below the central band are alternating black and white diagonal shapes, the black ones look like shark fins Bottom left: a central reddish-orange band delineated with a white line. Above the central band are swirling, spiralling white lines against a black background, and below the central band are alternating white and black diagonal lines. Bottom right: A central band delineated with white lines contains white 's'-shaped diagonal white stripes. Above the central band a row of red dots outlined with white circles. Below the central band a single white line on the black background. This type of Minoan pottery is known as Kamares Ware, named after the Kamares Cave on Mount Ida on the Greek island of Crete where this kind of pottery was first discovered. Kamares Ware vessels were luxury items produced by palace workshops at Phaistos and Knossos on Crete. These five cups were excavated at Phaistos and are dated 1800-1700 BC.

A rare and fragile survival from Viking-age York! A delicate silk cap made of hand-spun, undyed silk, c. AD 875-950 Silk was an exotic material imported via a vast network of Viking trade routes. Found during excavations at Coppergate in 1980. Yorkshire Museum 📷 by me #FindsFriday #Archaeology

My photo shows a hood-shaped silk cap from Viking Age York displayed on a thin metal stand against a dark display case background at the Yorkshire Museum. It is made from a rectangle of hand-spun, undyed silk, and shaped at the back by a centre seam. The pale silk is yellowy-gold in colour with a shiny lustre. The edges have been neatened with fine hems. According to the museum, it was probably worn with ties to fasten it to the head, as it includes the remains of two groups of stitches with which to attach ties. The museum says that the silk cap was likely worn by a female Anglo-Scandinavian resident of York. Also that “Silk was incredibly rare in the Viking North because it was not made locally. Silk-weaving is a Chinese technology, but by the 10th-century, the practice had reached the Arabian Peninsula, the Byzantine Empire, and parts of North Africa and Spain. Silk used to make the cap was imported from one of these places. The fine, pale-toned material would have been recognised in the town as a highly expensive and exotic fashion item”.

This carved stone plaque was found in St Francis' Row in Cashel, and it is believed to be the sign for a tavern that was known as The Cat & Bagpipes, that once stood on the main street. It may date to as early as the 16-17th century, and offers a glimpse of Cashel's social life from centuries ago

These three whimsical painted scenes from an ancient Egyptian illustrated papyrus from Deir el-Medina, now in the collections at the British Museum, depict animals taking on human roles, some with an amusing inversion of their normal predator-prey relationship which was a common theme in ancient Egyptian satirical art. The top image shows a lion and gazelle playing a board game, probably senet. They sit on low stools, facing each other across a low table on which a board game with black playing pieces is laid out. Probably the popular ancient Egyptian board game senet. The gazelle sits on the left facing the lion. The animals sit upright, legs hanging down from the chair seat, forelegs raised, being used as arms. Each holds a game piece with their hoof and paw. The gazelle is brown with a black outline. It has black hooves, two long, black, s-shaped horns, and a black dot for its eye. It has long pointed ears at the back of its head. The lion is painted a sandy brown within a black outline. It has a dark brown shaggy mane, a black nose and eye. It’s mouth is ajar as if speaking. Lower left: A brown hippo and a black canine (likely a jackal or dog) appear to be brewing beer, working together over two large ceramic brewing jars. The hippo stands on its hind legs to the left of the brewing jar, using its front legs as arms which are plunged into the top of the pot. The canine stands on its hindlegs to the right of the pot, holding a bowl in its front paw.
