The Mughal artist Ustād Manṣūr, produced in the 1620s what is probably the most lively painting of a dodo. In fact, It is possible that he used live individuals as models, since two dodos where transported to the Mughal court in the early 17tn c

Night eyes 😎 Finally got proper pictures of this amazing phenomenon! Mantises change their eye color (and light sensitivity) at night by transporting pigments from the surface of each compound eye unit toward the deeper eye region. Same female Tenodera sinensis, two different times. #bugsky

The pseudopupil is clearly visible on her left eye, facing the camera.

"The SRC is marking the 10th Anniversary of a major milestone for underwater robotics: the maiden expedition of OceanOne to La Lune. On April 15, 2016, OceanOne recovered a beautiful 1664 Catalan Vase and brought it to the deck in one piece!

The Long-wattled Umbrellabird (Cephalopterus penduliger) are the weirdest birds, from pompadour/mohawk to long fleshy neck-tie shaped wattle that converts to a feather duster on command. Native to the Pacific coasts of Ecuador & Colombia, these extraordinary accessories are mostly found in males.

See our new paper examining how monkeyflowers handle salt spray landing on their leaves! Salt spray lands on plant leaves in coastal habitats around the world, yet we know little about how plants survive this stress.

Foliar salt spray exclusion & tissue tolerance underlie local adaptation to oceanic salt spray New #AJB research by @madisonplunkert.bsky.social, @pcdurant.bsky.social, @davidlowry.bsky.social & Katherine Egeler doi.org/10.1002/ajb2... #botany #plantscience #monkeyflower #Mimulus

The coastal perennial ecotype of Mimulus guttatus DC. (syn. Erythranthe guttata DC.) growing on a cliff at Montara State Beach, Montara, California, USA, with oceanic salt spray damage on the leaf margin. Coastal M. guttatus has delayed flowering, which contributes to a salt spray escape strategy by reducing the amount of salt spray reaching these plants. Still, some salt spray contacts the plant, so later-acting strategies that keep sodium from entering the leaves and prevent cell damage are also key for local adaptation to coastal habitat.
