A tangent: I'm very aware of them because they are my daughter's worst sensory aversion. Though it's only the horn "chirps" like when you lock and unlock. She barely notices regular honks (like when someone doesn't notice the light is green).

Car horns. We've taken an incredibly high salience, ear-damaging emergency signal necessary for warning of imminent deadly heavy equipment failure and backed into filling out fucking lives with it to no gain.

I think the right move, which I don't see enough of, is developing a synthetic philosophy of how to co-exist with all this, as humans have had to try do in past industrial revolutions. If I could convince a think tank to hire a cartoonist, I'd be doing it tomorrow instead of between projects.

electability arguments are always but always bullshit that is trying to snow you. vote--and advocate as vigorously as you can for--your preference in the primary, vote against the greater evil in the general. anybody who presents a different option takes you for a rube.

you should vote for the candidate that you think will do the best job in office for their constituents and not try to do some pool-trick bankshot based on ads that haven't been cut yet and perceptions of how median voters will react

"Scientists who use AI are morons who aren't reading" I'm a computational social scientist and I feel like LLMs are a lot of things, but one thing they can be is a computational tool for text-based information in science. Here is what I am doing this morning

Even Trump’s critics give him too much credit: they assume that this stuff is part of something grandly presidential, albeit evil. A cunning political ploy. A sinister plan to steal 2028. No! He’s that one unstable person you know who goes on and on about the time they were wronged a decade ago.

ID can be worth it as a tradeoff for packages including other things. But having all paper ballots / voter-verified paper audit trail is something we already have everywhere except Louisiana (long story but they'll get there by 2028) and it doesn't stop people from yelling about it as if we don't.

“Over prior years, we didn’t pay as much attention as we should have to the experience of our most knowledgeable engineers that have been with us through many product cycles.” Evergreen.

Big Sadness doesn't want you to know this, but just quietly being in the presence of someone you love and who loves you in return is very nice, actually.

it was really funny because we all remember the recent period where you were being messaged about HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO SPEND MONEY and IF YOU ARE NOT SPENDING MONEY, YOU ARE LOSING

To understand what's happening, you need to understand that some people genuinely, without any artifice, believe we are getting recursive self-improving intelligence in the next year or two. Folks view this as akin to the race for nuclear weapons in terms of international import.
