Covid lockdowns demonstrated, in a deeply imperfect way, the possibility of large-scale social solidarity for a higher cause. That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.

We also talked about preserving art, even when times are terrible. “If you lose culture in your society, the society dies. If you lose your art museums and your galleries, all you have is thugs and fighting and people being mean. In times of trouble, art gives us the backbone to keep fighting.”

I should (blog? zine?) re:arts residency opportunities, as an area I wasn't aware of a year ago, just assumed wasn't a category of thing I could apply for. Am thinking there might be other DHy/maker/craft folks interested? or encouraged to not just go "I'm not an artist/what they're looking for"?

and fwiw, the users are definitely the problem here, because in a way it's why they came here. to escape the constant, ugly drama of other sites and protect against that. but the platform itself is a problem. so much effort toward self-moderation has meant a culture of people talking to themselves.

Almost 16 yrs ago, I was super hopeful for tech to empower. Started @wholesomezine.bsky.social w/friends. We planted a seed, nurtured it, now it’s becoming a scene that we’re watching bloom🌸. Stopped caring about social crap about 5 yrs ago but we keep growing. Creators + people > platforms + bots.

I’m more convinced than ever before that there is a group of people who truly wants us to enter a new dark ages - a time where technology, science, and comfort are reserved for kings, queens, and their loyalty and the rest of us are told to pray and wait for a savior. We are the savior we need.
