Labor of love published! We integrated fatty acid database created by @awegalloway.bsky.social with under-ice freshwater phytoplankton data to understand how nutrition available to lake food web shifts seasonally! Under-ice plankton are nutritious! esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

For those keeping score at home: The Ohio GOP Senator who long refused to denounce his MAGA son-in-law who allegedly abused the senator's daughter and granddaughter is a *different Republican* from the Ohio GOP Senator who has long employed a white supremacist who likes to cosplay as Nazis.

EXCLUSIVE: A top staffer to Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio) appeared to wear an SS uniform while marching near Nazi flags in photos. He also created a public Spotify playlist called “Tales From Rhodesia," the White-run African colony embraced by white supremacists. Gift link: wapo.st/4xkuEa0

I am so excited to announce that my first first-author, peer reviewed paper was just published in @ecol-evol.bsky.social! The PrED model aims to save researchers time and resources by finding points in their videos where potential predator-prey encounters have occurred. doi.org/10.1002/ece3...

My zooplankton scanner is coming along nicely! I did a test run with a Daphnia individual in a drop of water on an Epson Perfection V550 photo scanner and it turned out great. The tray (Pic 2) should hold enough water to prevent that color distortion. Best part is everything came to less than $200

Image of a Daphnia individual captured on an Epson Perfection v550 scanner. Color distortion due to volume of water used.Piece of PVC board and glass adhered together with silicone, being clamped down and weighed down.

Of all the harm this administration has done to US science, today's proposed changes to the way federal grants are awarded and administered is the most damaging yet. The text of the federal register document is impenetrably tedious by design, so here's an excellent summary of what it says.

Summary of Key Changes in OMB’s Proposed Federal Financial Assistance Rule. Russell Vought is going destroy American Science. elizabethginexi.substack.com/p/summary-of...

This means that hundreds, if not thousands of labs all over the country will close. Tens of thousands of jobs will be lost. This is in defiance of Congress's will and in defiance of good stewardship of the US economy. This is entirely because Russ Vought hates science

Less than 800 NSF grants awarded over the first half of the fiscal year for the entire country. Previous years were already over 2-3k awards by now. It is not particularly overdramatic to say we are seeing the death of federally funded science research in the United States.
