"Classes struggle to mix well." I'll let you decide how to interpret this comment by #a2council candidate Rebecca Arends: as an argument against including affordable units in market-rate housing projects, or an as argument in support of exclusionary zoning writ large. Either way: A doozy.

Rabhi's comments at Monday's forum should alarm #a2council voters. Every central plank of his platform--housing, public power, in-sourcing staff work--is unfunded, and Rabhi's plan to pay for it all is literally (a) hope it pays for itself, and when it doesn't (b) load the city up with debt.

I don't get it. Rabhi got arrested in college for trespassing into Mary Sue Coleman's office. What possible relevance does that have to anything? Does he think that qualifies him to urge unarmed civilians to confront masked, heavily armed ICE goons in the streets? #a2council

Much of what this editorial recommends--legalizing duplexes and triplexes, making it easier to build housing--are things we are doing today or plan to do in the near future. If Yousef Rabhi and his slate win their #a2council races in August, much or all of that work will slow or stop completely.

The MPO that covers Detroit and Ann Arbor is opposing a package of YIMBY bills that (among other things) legalizes ADUs and reduces parking requirements partly on the basis that they risk "exposing residents to E.coli..." Truly bizarre taxpayer-funded lobbying.

Reasonable minds can differ on Arbor South, but Rabhi's opposition ("disgusting," "revolting") is overheated and alarming. In the range of outcomes, a 2nd downtown is a best-case scenario: a boon for residents, businesses, and the tax base. Rabhi would turn that down? Wild. #a2council

🧵 This is an important and unintuitive point. This does not mean cities should plan to be 4-5x bigger. What is permitted does not dictate what is built. A high-zoned capacity allows for more thoughtful and contextual redevelopment because there are many more development opportunities to meet demand.
