You’ll feel different about that when you’re older. He/Him

It's too depressing and obnoxious to write about, but virtually all of the doomy/horny AI hyperventilating is transparently displaced anxiety about our fucked climate and political situation. Even rich idiots know it's bad and being permitted to get worse. They're trying to write their own ending.

I very much want to read this one. Pope Leo summoned Gareth Gore to the Vatican awhile back for a closed-door meeting about which Gore - who has desperately tried to get multiple popes to give a fuck about his reporting - said little except that he left feeling good about where they left things 👀

Next book is Opus by Gareth Gore. When the Pope calls a book a “rigorous piece of work” and you’re a lapsed Catholic that’s married to a Catholic who’s very frustrated with the church and loves your recaps of @clairewillett.bsky.social threads, well, you put your name on the waitlist

This is the seventh book in the series and it’s the same fast paced action that I enjoyed from the first three. If you’re this far in there’s no reason to stop now. I will say something that’s not about the book but about me skipping from book three to seven which no gen x, scifi fan has said ever

Next up is This Inevitable Ruin, another Dungeon Crawler Carl. Each book is a floor of the dungeon and @mattdinniman.bsky.social makes a bold artistic choice by flashing forward from the third floor to the ninth. It’s definitely that and not that I screwed up which book to reserve at the library

The book This Inevitable Ruin by Matt Dinniman. It’s actually the ninth book in the series, not the fourth. How I managed to screw this up is beyond me. Anyway, time to put my “spoilers don’t matter” claims to the test

The U.S. military swung into action to intercept a Chinese ship after an “entirely false” AI-generated intelligence report inaccurately identified what the vessel was carrying It also “almost started a war,” a source told CNN.

The episode shows the risks of using this new, relatively poorly understood technology in the middle of the Iran war

I can’t stop thinking about this story of a 40 year old Christian Fellowship for law enforcement getting caught making one spectacularly bad hire and immediately disbanding the organization. Feels like they really don’t want anyone digging into their hiring practices or history

Yet another update: The Christian cop group that hired — and then fired — an ex-deputy who was accused of assaulting nearly two dozen women has itself quietly dissolved.

My wife is good about letting our neighbors take clippings from the garden and has built up quite a little fan club. Today a neighbor dropped off some eggs from their chickens and (I think?) quails. I ask in all seriousness: what should I do with the quail eggs?

An egg carton with six eggs. Three are brown chicken eggs and three are smaller dark grey eggs with brown spots

A couple of months ago when we were stuck in the house I put on Fried Green Tomatoes and was surprised to hear that my wife had never seen it. Turns out she hasn’t seen many movies from 80’s and 90’s so we’ve been watching the heavy hitters that I thought she’d really like to have seen.

A good buddy cop story has lots of action, quippy dialogue and a massive conspiracy run by a mustache twirling evil genius. @scalzi.com delivers on all of it and it’s highly entertaining. Written six years before COVID, his commentary on post pandemic life and tech oligarchy is shockingly on point

Next book is @scalzi.com’s Lock In. It takes place after a global pandemic from a flu like illness which can cause long term neurological damage. Also everyone is trying to move on and pretend it never happened. It came out in 2014 so it ruins the “Novel of the near future” tagline for everyone else

The book Lock In by John Scalzi. The tagline reads “A novel of the near future”

Take a break from being depressed that everything you love is being destroyed by slop for a moment and let me tell you about the beautiful symbiotic relationship between graffiti writers, train yard workers, and model train enthusiasts.

A hand holding a model train with a replica of the same graffiti on the full scale train car behind it.A model train with two graffiti pieces on opposite sides.

While it’s great that this happened quickly the whole “we’re sorry for the damage we caused to law enforcement agencies and the taxpayers” bit really makes me wonder where CLEF gets its money from

More proof that #JournalismMatters: Late last week, @jakobmcwhinney.bsky.social revealed that an ex-deputy convicted of assaulting women he encountered on the job was working as a chaplain advising cops in crisis. Now he's out of that job. shorturl.at/9juFG
