People build in forests because they love forests. But forests also burn. What is happening near Spokane is a tragedy—and a warning about decades of allowing homes to spread through fire-prone landscapes. Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint may face an even greater reckoning.
More than 700 structures lost as 65,000 evacuate in Washington state wildfires
Officials have yet to determine how many of the destroyed structures were homes, businesses or schools. No injuries have been reported.

Most of the lagoons and ‘billabongs’ adjacent to the major river system in Australia, the Murray Darling, are gone. It’s a tragedy
Climate forcing: some activities force the climate to drift. Forcing activities include fossil energies, mining, bovine husbandry, tree plantations, etc. 🧵
Our smoke-filled summers, courtesy of fossil fuels. "On average, ACC [anthropogenic climate change] contributes 49% to smoke PM2.5 concentrations in the western United States from 1997 to 2020, and explains 58% of the increasing trend in smoke PM2.5 from 2010 to 2020."

This is an important point. While some hard limits (cannot be overcome by any means) to adaptation might be identified through biophysical research, identifying most hard limits and all soft limits (we hit because we choose not to do things that are needed) requires actually trying to adapt.
This is also, tangentially, a response to those saying we’re already seeing the limits of adaptation. No, we’re not. We’ve barely begun to adapt. And that’s being generous. Adaptation has limits - and they’ll vary by system - but we won’t reach them until we genuinely mobilize to reduce risk.
[And yet again I plead: don’t quote battery “capacity” in units of power (MW or GW). Use *energy*: MWh, GWh. Or tell us power AND runtime (“xMW for y hrs” etc.). But NEVER EVER POWER ONLY. That just betrays that you don’t really understand the role of storage. 🤷♂️]
Battery storage in the EU is set to QUADRUPLE from 37 GW in 2025 to 178 GW by 2030 🔋 This could enable far more wind and solar power to be absorbed and reduce the region's reliance on gas for grid balancing. ember-energy.org/lat...
I spoke to @thetimes.com on horrible yields and how there is no "new normal" "As bad as this year’s harvest is proving to be, Behrens warned against seeing it as a “new normal”. “Until we get our carbon emissions down things will continue to get much, much worse.”" www.thetimes.com/uk/environme...

Land & marine heatwaves, droughts, fires, floods, landslides, sea-level rise, super-charged typhoons, weather whiplash Climate change is harmful, fossil fuels cause it, we know who's responsible👇, non-fossil alternatives are viable

"At best, it is a long-term option contingent on heavy subsidies, regulatory change and infrastructure build-out. The risk is that reliance on #CCS could delay more viable alternatives (renewables, storage, green hydrogen) and expose Germany to high costs and project failures"

I keep on saying the same things, so here we go: People think mitigation politics is impossible, but the type of adaptation politics we tend to play is superficially ok at best and only in the short run (it is terribly toxic in the long run)

much agreement with this 🧵 but pol science has clearly shown that ideologically opposition to clean energy is a direct function of political efforts in fossil fuels sectors and constituencies to generate such ideology. So no, fossil lobbying for their interests and culture wars are not separate.
While I agree with Bill that the fossil fuel lobby paid for a lot of climate denial in previous decades, I see ideological opposition to clean energy (and climate action) as a much bigger barrier to progress today than fossil lobbyists.

"The hotter and drier the weather, the drier the scrub, grass and woodland become. Dry vegetation doesn’t just burn more easily, it burns faster, spreads further, and is far harder to bring under control once it’s alight." Climate change is turning the landscape into fuel. #Wildfires per @350.org:
