This is hysterically funny. For starters, Burnham doesn’t remotely need the support of an increasingly irrelevant Tory party. For seconds “We’ll work with you but only if you do it exactly the way we want” isn’t collaboration and isn’t a tactic you can employ here. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Askham Bog Nature Reserve is widely regarded as one of the most ecologically diverse and historically significant sites in Northern England. Situated just two miles from the historic heart of York, this 120-acre lowland peatland acts as a living capsule of post-glacial development and human resource exploitation. As a remarkable survivor of the ancient fenlands of the Vale of York, its history is deeply intertwined with natural transformations, centuries of human intervention, and pioneering twentieth-century conservation efforts. In 1946, the famed local chocolatiers and philanthropists Francis Terry and Arnold Rowntree purchased the site to safeguard it from development. To accept the gift and manage the land, the Yorkshire Naturalists' Trust now known as the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust was established, making Askham Bog its inaugural nature reserve.

Immediately we see the problem with Burnham. He isn’t someone with great ideas. He’s a good communicator who latches onto the ideas of others. If he’s surrounded by people with good ideas, he’ll do good things. If he’s not, he won’t.

The reason elite consensus switched on net zero is that the elite realized: 1) Carbon capture doesn’t work, and carbon removal is really challenging. 2) The world is facing trillions of dollars in devalued assets if we actually do phase out fossil fuels. So they decided to let the world burn.

Reading people's thoughts on Sam Neill has made my think about "Don't speak ill of the dead". Maybe that particular convention of manners is ill-advised? Maybe we should drive home a message - be a good person, be well-remembered? Be a bad person, be badly-remembered?

I actually spoke to him recently for a piece for Empire, and he was as funny and warm as you could wish. I recommend today looking up interviews about his farm and his tradition of naming livestock after his leading ladies. He knew how to live.
