This is a great project but the frustrating thing is if the Office of Planning and Zoning Commission had adopted amendments to the alley lot proposal proposed by us and one of the 6C ANCs, it would be by-right and the project could have avoided months of delay and approval uncertainty.

Why are we pushing for sixplexes on every lot? Why not focus on transit-oriented development? Short answer: it's not either/or. We need both, and we need to enable both in the upcoming comprehensive plan rewrite. Longer answer.. 🧵

Tony Byrne@tonybyrne.bsky.social · last mo.Agreed! Young homeowners in my leafy DC suburbs have quasi-PTSD from their own house searching, and a lot of positive generational solidarity. Only challenge is activating them politically in proportion to their numbers, as they are (understandably) very busy.

Urban Land Rent 🇸🇴🚰@urbanlandrent.bsky.social · last mo.There’s a an age/ race element to this story but if you actually dig in it’s mostly about “who rents vs who owns a home?” In cities. Turns out those people vote for different kinds of elected officials.
One amusing but infuriating aside - the commissioner that voted against said they could approve 4 units and if more was needed OP could come back and they'd approve it quickly. But OP has been working on this for over 4 years! It took ZC more than a year to approve it!

One of the ways you can tell these subdistricts are a bad idea is to look at existing vibrant neighborhoods. Georgetown, Dupont, U St, etc weren't built this way. A neighborhood should be shaped by the people and businesses that show up to live, work, and play there.
DC YIMBYs@dcyimbys.bsky.social · 2mo agoThe fundamental issue is the city is trying to shape specific uses of buildings along the corridor, splitting it into housing, retail, and arts sub-districts. All these things should be allowed throughout - the city shouldn't be directing this.

I’m thrilled to receive the support of @dcyimbys.bsky.social #1 rank in their Ward 1 endorsement! I strongly believe housing is a human right, though we can’t guarantee access to housing that does not exist.

A couple brief thoughts on these responses. 1) Many candidates - including all four mayoral candidates - indicated support for our entire Comp Plan Agenda. Full implementation of our agenda would allow us to build the homes we need to drive down costs in the District.
