"The fantasy of insurance is that we can give a bunch of capitalists a pot of money so big they’ll let it sit for us, rather than using it to make themselves richer and more powerful at our expense." Required reading: thebaffler.com/salvos/i-mig...
I Might Need Security | Madeleine Baker
Capitalism transforms the quest to control risk into the most reckless gambling—just look to the insurance industry.

Can we make Wordy Winter happen? Self-organized? Here's a spreadsheet of wordy books I'd like to read or read & liked. Next steps: 1. Add more books! 2. Pick one & share contact info, or find irl friends who want to read it too 4. Get together! 5. Spread the word! docs.google.com/spreadsheets...
Please buy my books so I can buy more books, thank you for your attention to this crucial matter

A small update: I've confirmed CVS and Walgreens expect to have vaccines in stock within a few days. I have NOT yet confirmed the state-by-state breakdown of requirements (e.g., if there are states where Rx will be required or there will be other limitations). PLEASE READ NEXT POST BEFORE COMMENTING
What to Know About New Covid Vaccines for Fall 2026 (Gift Article)
The shots have been approved for people 65 and older, and for younger people with underlying conditions. Others may be able to get them off label.

Just a heads up that the 2026-27 covid vaccine was approved, and you can already get appointments some places. I'm scheduled for next week at CVS!
I was going to add The Waves to the Wordy Winter list, but someone beat me to it. I did add The Recognitions and The Man Without Qualities. I haven't signed up for anything yet because I'm still deliberating. I'll probably do The Waves, The Recognitions, or Gravity's Rainbow, though.

Love this idea. I recently bought a print version of Middlemarch for a re-read sometime in the next year. But it’d be a fourth read through for me so more in the spirit of the concept, I should tackle some Pynchon (I’ve only read Lot 49) or start Crowley’s Aegypt tetralogy.
Might I suggest a new trend of Wordy Winter, where read difficult books together? This winter I'm tackling Proust with friends. What about you? lithub.com/in-praise-of...

In Praise of “Wordy, Old Prose.” (Or, F*ck Your AI Reading Buddy)
More than two years ago I wrote an angry piece about how lame the bulletpointization of books is: the point of reading and engaging with books is not so the reader can consume little bullet points …

THE NEVERENDING STORY. The imagination, heart, and depth of that book take my breath away, and it speaks to me differently at every age I read it
In honor of Dolly and her commitment to getting books to kids, tell me about a book you read as a child that changed your life. I’ll start: so many, but tonight maybe I’ll say A WRINKLE IN TIME, a book that taught me anger wasn’t wrong.
Texas’s drag ban was found to be unconstitutional this morning and one of the plaintiffs who brought the suit was an Austin-based drag queen who often impersonates Dolly Dolly was named in the final judgement itself and after hearing about the lawsuit, she sent that drag queen a signed guitar

Brea and Mallory recommend books with unique structures! Plus, they solve a reader problem about offensive audiobook narrators, and recommend horror graphic novels.

Holy fuck a world where we dont have to pay rent, medical bills, where we have food enough to eat, where our friends and loved ones dont have to work themselves to the bone and we could actually spend all our time together
So incredibly excited for Craig's work: "This project sets out to answer one of the most consequential unresolved questions in ocean science: have we been fundamentally misreading the biodiversity of our own planet?"
My university wrote up our new $2M NSF project, and I got to say the thing I believe: the deep sea isn't empty, it's just unread. We're using DNA to read it at a resolution nobody has tried, sampling the abyssal plain to find who really lives there. 🧪 #marinelife louisiana.edu/news/ul-lafa...
