Scientist at St Jude using structural biology to try and understand how things work - views are my own not my institutions
The successful candidate will be a member of the Department of Chemistry, ultimately teaching on the Biochemistry and Chemistry degree programs. It is roughly equivalent to a tenure-track assistant professor position in the US.
YSBL has a research culture that is both supportive and ambitious, which we are all enormously proud of. It is also an environment where people readily work together to achieve more than they could alone. To me, it’s a special place to work.
YSBL is also well equipped for crystallography and protein NMR. Beyond YSBL, the Bioscience Technology Facility houses brilliant facilities for light microscopy, mass spec, and biophysics (amongst many other things!).
Our Cryo-EM facility, supported by expert technical staff (Johan Turkenburg and Sam Hart), is housed in the custom-built Dodsons Building and has an energy-filter equipped Glacios and an incoming FIB-mill.
The successful candidate will be a member of the York Structural Biology Laboratory (YSBL), a research centre build around ~15 structural biology groups from the Departments of Chemistry and Biology.

It really is amazing. Another related point is that Academia wouldn't actually be doing its job if it *didn't* send the bulk of its knowledge and highly trained individuals into other parts of society.
Also, it is a pyramidal structure. Not all post docs can progress to become PIs. I would wish that there were some mid-level permanent staff scientist positions for those that would like to continue bench work instead of taking a more administrative role as PI, but as things are now, it is PI or out
