Just a few weeks after launch, and Sentinel-3C is sending back beautiful views of our planet! Still lots to do before the satellite is ready for operations but it's a big step along to path that we have such excellent data already. Congrats to the whole team. 🛰️

Envisioned, built, and launched by Europe. @esa.int keeps delivering the reliable satellites that enable the European Commission's world-leading Copernicus programme. And now, Sentinel-3C is showing us what it can do. www.esa.int/Applications...

Yesterday I gave a talk about oceanography and remote sensing to a group of teens and teachers. Always fun (and challenging!). I brought a small infrared camera and passed it along to explain those measurements, I think that's what they liked the most 😅. Here's a picture with part of the group 😀🌊🧪

an image in infrared of people sitting in an auditorium. Background and chairs are blue and people in yellow, red and white. We can recognize the faces as the white (warmest) parts in the image.

For me, it is a bad idea that many scientists use the hype AI term (among others, because funding agencies ask for that!) instead of deep learning or machine learning, which describe more accurately what we do in most applications. And I think this will backlash at some point...

There are many uses for AI in science - modeling, data analysis, certain diagnostics - none of those are LLMs and frankly not even really “AI” as we’ve come to know it at all and TBH we need a different name for this kind of “AI” so the science stuff can stop getting dragged into this argument.

One week to go until MTG-I2 lift-off! 🚀 MTG-I2 will deliver faster, more detailed observations - helping meteorologists detect severe weather earlier and improve forecasts. While we wait for launch, get to know our newest satellite below! 🛰️👇

I've come from the wildfire in Spain to the wildfire in Belgium 😭. Here Xavier Fettweis, from @universitedeliege.bsky.social reminds everyone that scientists have been warning for a long time that this was going to happen, but no one listens!!

On savait que cela arriverait dans les #Fagnes" > le climatologue Xavier Fettweis (ULg) au JT RTBF info: "On n'a pas voulu investir, ni dans les pompiers ni dans une cartographie des Fagnes... Or tout était connu! L'an dernier on avait même défini les zones à risque" (vidéo) #DésastreDesFagnes

Where were you when the #eclipse hit today? 🌖✨ While millions watched from the ground across Europe, we had a view from space. 🛰️ Did you catch the total or partial eclipse where you are? Let us know in the comments - and check back tomorrow for more imagery and information! 💬
