I think we can agree that AI detectors are out. But universities are ignoring the fact that faculty cannot really out-design assessments to meet the challenges of this moment. We need sustained institutional support to be the best teachers we can be, and we aren't getting it.

offered as support for education, the message seems to be that writing has nothing to do with what they actually think or that thinking involves choosing from a menu of pre-existing options. This is a strange gaslighting because at each step, Claude is telling you that you are writing this paper /6

From Tom Edsall’s column. I wish he had specified what he means by “wedge-issue attacks.” I’m also not sure what it means to say that Dems have been “vulnerable” to these things for 60 years. Presumably, he is suggesting that backlash politics has, on balance, harmed the Democrats.

In reality, the Democratic Party has been vulnerable since the 1960s to wedge-issue attacks on such subjects as civil rights, women’s rights, affirmative action, welfare spending, crime, gun control, gay marriage and transgender rights.
