#Cargobike riding, mom of 4, living in the #carcentric suburbs of Edmonton using #activetransportation and #publictransit while avoiding being hit by drivers. Even in winter. Also a lawyer, but don't hold that against me.

Cleared ≠ usable Roads were drivable. Walking and biking routes weren’t passable. The issue wasn’t clearing — it was coordination. Cleared paths were made unusable by road clearing. Everyone, including the 25% of Edmontonians who don't drive, deserve to be able to get around.

3yo bedtime logic is epic. Sir Squawk sneaks out after bedtime, so I sit at the top of the stairs. 3: You can go now mommy, I’m asleep. Me: You can’t talk if you’re asleep. 3: (thinks) I’m sleeping like Daddy (fake snores) No notes.

I wonder how accurate this is. If Edmonton average driving time is 20min per 10km, that's only 30km/h. I average about 21km/h on my bike. And my average speed by bike doesn't change based on rush hour traffic. Why are people driving again? #yegbike

Canada's most congested cities were especially gridlocked in 2022 as commuters started returning to the office, and since then, they've gotten... Slightly worse!

This hits hard. I too experienced an "event" many years ago which turned out to be, what my doctor described as a mini heart attack, due to undiagnosed super high blood pressure enlarging part of my heart. Scary is an understatement. 1/ www.bikeradar.com/advice/healt...

Almost got hit twice today by cars right on red-ing without looking for pedestrians. Different intersections but both time the light had just gone green for me and they were racing to beat the oncoming traffic. Any Australian who thinks we should have the equivalent hates pedestrians

This is a fantastic thread about what #wintercycling is and isn't. It's not extreme, but it does add challenges that don't exist in other seasons. I love the point that snow is different from rain because rain disappears, and snow/ice can remain a problem for weeks or months if not addressed.

I dislike the framing of winter as an “excuse”, as if you can wish it away. I see it as an additional *challenge* that is *surmountable*. Winter cities need to (1) design bike infrastructure for snow, (2) care about plowing, and (3) learn how to do a good job of plowing/maintaining the bike lanes.
