It's been an amazing four years serving Bend as your mayor. I'm all in to keep tackling our housing, transportation, and climate challenges. If you're a fan of pro-housing mayors who get results, follow @keblerformayor.bsky.social, donate, and share my post below to support my re-election campaign.
It's official: I’m seeking another term to provide tested and trusted leadership in this pivotal moment. I hope you'll support my campaign so we can keep building a thriving city that’s safe, inclusive, and affordable for everyone.
Administration: building roads will lower wildfire risk. Reality: wildfire ignitions in national forests are highest in lands within 50m of roads (7.99 fires/1000 ha), lowest in wilderness areas (1.75 fires/1000 ha) and designated roadless areas (1.97 fires/1000 ha). Roads = people. People = fire.
Three-decade record of contiguous-U.S. national forest wildfires indicates increased density of ignitions near roads - Fire Ecology
Background Roads play an important role in managing fire on the national forests. But roads also are known to increase ignitions and damage ecosystems. Roads may limit the size of wildfires, which may...

I wrote about my personal (bad) feelings about climate change and why I think “individual action” (often denigrated) is important, at least for preserving one’s own sanity:

Within 5 seconds of any traffic death, some asshole is honking about what's taking so long.
When your entire identity is your car, and you make stickers of it. 😑
There's a lot of people out there who put a LOT of their self-worth into being a car-owner, and the idea that they might be the problem is devastating to their psyche.
One thing about speeding that many drivers refuse to accept: In urban and suburban environments, speeding doesn't even get you somewhere significantly faster. You are just getting to your next red light or highway choke point faster. You are endangering other people for almost no upside.
Wish there was growing backlash against violent drivers in proportion to the harm they cause
Millions of drivers across the country are encountering speed cameras for the first time, or will soon. Some don't like it, but advocates say there's clear evidence that cameras make roads safer. n.pr/4gwT62D
It's Waymopalooza in Tigard lately. 😮🤖
Cars are dangerous for people outside of them, they are LOUD, they pollute the air and water (microplastics from tire wear for starters), which is a significant public health concern. Plus, cars require a TON of public space to drive and park that all of us subsidize indirectly. 13/15

More trains! But, not THOSE trains. It's not green hydrogen, it from the:

Hydrogen trains are a scam. Slow and power inefficient if powered by electrolysis, but largely powered by hydrogen created from steam methane reforming. It's greenwashing, promoted by fossil fuel giants. @streetsforall.org reviews the situation in California in a new video.

Sharing this piece I wrote about how low vision cyclists use ebikes and how license and insurance requirements will create barriers for us
E-Bikes Mean Freedom for Low-Vision Bicyclists
Recently enacted and proposed regulations requiring licenses or insurance for e-bike riders threaten a vital transportation lifeline for Americans who can’t drive.

Your city isn’t doing enough to address the climate crisis. We are beyond the time for incremental changes like EVs - cities need to be getting people out of cars, which means significantly increasing housing density and investing in high frequency transit.
What’s a thing from your area of expertise (or special interest) that you think it would behoove everyone else to know?
Butcher says the old folks at the market want “cars all the time. Cars cars cars.”
Business owner wants to be able to see their car from their business. Afraid of people outside of their car.
Butcher who drives in from Carnation every day says traffic safety is the responsibility of pedestrians. Says he has been bullied by pedestrians when he drives on Pike Place.
It was pouring (and thundering!!) at camp pick up time yesterday so I asked my kid if he wanted to ride home or be picked up by car and he said “Bike, of course! I love the rain!” Child after my heart 💗 Rochester, NY
