New paper from my lab! growth factors and keratinocytes are involved in peripheral opioid tolerance. Potential therapeutic outcomes to treat chronic pain at the periphery without CNS mediated side effects! Great collaboration with postdoc @dr-lupo.bsky.social #iscience #opioidresearch #opioidsafety
Excited to share that our new paper is now out @cellpress.bsky.social: www.cell.com/iscience/ful... This work explores how keratinocytes and PDGF-B/PDGFRβ signaling contribute to peripheral opioid tolerance, providing new insights into mechanisms that help guide future pain therapeutics.

So the president openly threatens gay people and it’s not a major news story?
Dear all, Because of your help shining light on this all 15 were reinstated today. This is a huge win for science - When We Fight We Win!!!
On Valentine’s day, 15 Assistant Professors at NIH who had started their research labs in the last 2 years were fired. Their scientific expertise was built over 10-12 years of training, most if not all of which was supported by NIH. The start up funds for their laboratories were paid by NIH

This is just it. The amount of damage being done to American government will require far more money and resources to fix after Trump and Musk are done with their rampage.
If you worked for 18F and got fired, Group together to start a consulting company. It’s just a matter of time before DOGE needs you to fix the mess they inevitably create. They will have to hire your company as a contractor to fix it. But on your terms. I’m happy to invest and/or help
“Since the entire staff was also placed on administrative leave, we have been locked out of our computers, and have no chance to assist in an orderly transition in our work.” Sounds super efficient and safe
I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F. 18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it. We made this website to tell our story: 18f.org

Confusion has ensued about the future of programs and research supporting people with disabilities as a result of President Trump’s executive order.

Regarding CSR Study Sections: SROs are apparently being told that their communication to their valued reviewer colleagues must be: "The xxxx meeting will be rescheduled for a later date, yet to be determined. Thank you for the time you've invested in the reviews. Signed by CSR SRO" Please be kind
The United States is not a business. There are no shareholders. There is no board of directors. There is no mandate to turn a profit. The business analogy with government was always a broken one. Government exists to serve the common good for the people. Taxes fund the common good.
CSR puts an asterisk for study sections not being held as scheduled www.csr.nih.gov/RevPanelsAnd... Explained by this: www.thetransmitter.org/funding/fede... 😞

NIH Updates Good news: It appears that at least of the submitted F31 diversity supplements for which the study section had disappeared from eRA commons are reappearing with the original study section. Still uncertain future, but it's a step. 1/2

In the few weeks Trump/Musk have been in office, I have felt threatened for being a foreign national and underrepresented minority, grant was removed from study section - no explanation (and won’t be reviewed), and federal support to universities which enables my work is gone. How long will I last?
This is going to have an extremely detrimental impact on universities and US research. Will lead to loss of millions of jobs and will end US research excellence
My #Yale colleague Harlan Krumholz explains why the cuts to indirect costs are a disaster for biomedical research in the United States. Want to do something about it? I'll list those who have to hear from us below. Share, recruit friends and family to help. 1/ www.statnews.com/2025/02/08/n....
Don’t believe the Trump administration’s lies. De-funding the NIH, excluding students from specific backgrounds from funding, and excluding research studying women and other underrepresented groups is not “efficient.” It’s destroying science. arghavan.substack.com/p/do-not-be-...
Sounds like a broad funding pause until mid February? Any lawyers who can clarify for a scientist?
🚨OMB sent a memo to federal agencies this evening, requiring all federal loans and grants be paused by 5pm tomorrow. 🚨 Financial assistance is defined here to include all federal grants/loans except those that provide direct assistance to individuals.
I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.
White House pauses all federal grants, sparking confusion
The Trump administration has put a hold on all federal financial grants and loans, affecting tens of billions of dollars in payments.

If you are ready to advocate to your representatives (or friends and families) about the economic value of NIH funded research, you can check your state at www.unitedformedicalresearch.org/nih-in-your-...
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.
1. I feel like this is such obvious advice that it gets taken for granted & consequently no one says this to young scientists but READ PAPERS, read all the papers. As you move up in your career you will have less & less time to do this. Read everything that appeals to you not just in your field
