New Scientist: COVID variant XFG is now dominant globally and better at evading antibodies. Immunity from vaccines and prior infections is still helping prevent widespread severe illness, but experts warn future variants remain a threat as declining global surveillance makes them harder to track.

A screenshot of an article headline from the New Scientist website, celebrating its 70 years anniversary logo.
The primary headline asks: "Does each new covid-19 variant pose a significant threat?" Below it, a subheadline reads: "Most covid-19 cases are caused by a particular type of variant, but do we need to worry every time a new one emerges?" The article is written by Jo Marchant and is dated 9 October 2026.
The lower half of the screenshot shows an illustration of multiple coronavirus particles with round red bodies covered in light blue spike proteins against a dark green, textured background. A small yellow warning icon caption below the image reads: "We've lived with covid-19 for more than half a decade, but it's still evolving." It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

My wife: Can you read our baby a book?
Me: I can just play an audiobook from my phone.
My wife: But then it won't be in your voice.
Me: I can train a voice model.
Parenting hits different when you work in Al.

Here's the thing: most books that are banned don't make the lists that get circulated each #BannedBooksWeek. If you're a book creator and your book gets banned, please respond to this post with your book and its buy link on bookshop.org. That way we can support indies and banned books 💛

The White House’s proposal to penalize nonprofits that help disabled people vote is just part of the Trump administration’s broader attempts to restrict voting access, especially among groups that have historically faced disenfranchisement.

This is huge: a judge ruled a Flock search was 'indiscriminate mass surveillance' and unconstitutional. Says the search by a cop, who did it because a passing car had a plate from a different state, violated the driver's rights. Meaning, Flock should require a warrant www.404media.co/federal-judg...

Your periodic reminder that the decision to pursue a professional ballet career happens at similar or earlier age to most youth gender affirming care and has significantly more lifetime impact on peer socialization, how the body looks and overall health than social transition and puberty blockers.

Reading the news this week & all the posts from women & keep thinking about the times I've told men in my life, "This guy is causing me problems and making me feel unsafe," and heard, "Cool. I like him, though"

So sick of this shit from these flogs. "The RBA has also dismissed the idea that landlords pass their increased borrowing costs on to renters." Go look at r/shitrentals to see the emails tenants get from their landleech hiking their rent "because interest rates". www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09...

The RBA just raised rates. It affects more than your home loan

While the RBA's decisions are most felt through mortgage repayments, their impact extends well beyond home loans.
