For one, the racist, classist, ableist, and xenophobic animus toward universal programs is premised on what is termed "the politics of desert." People are literally willing to accept a poorer quality of life if it means that members of an out-group is denied access to collective goods and services.
I will say this: evidence is not enough when a policymaker is ideologically committed to the status quo. The burden of proof is already higher for anyone building the case for alternatives to the status quo, and it is higher still when the evidence does not fit with their preconceived notions.

man, i wish that folks didn’t make big moralizing statements about people on glp-1s. some of us are out here with diabetes just trying not to lose a foot. my glp-1 controls my a1c, makes my life pretty normal, allows me not to use insulin.
My concern about estrangement is that many people do not understand that you are exchanging one kind of pain for another. Its not a simple solution. It is an amputation - chewing off your own foot to escape a bear trap with long term effects all around.
