In whatever field that you have expertise in, it's such a communication challenge to convey how bad other humans have been treated by the present regime without creating so much dissonance that the person shuts down.

me to my mom, based on the "Chinese AI engineers aren't freaking out and US ones are" posts: "so either AI is gonna kill us all or the US dudes are basically playing Bloody Mary and freaking each other out like me and my friends did in 5th grade" my mom: wait, you what?
Much worse. In a nutshell, they're fine with humans going extinct, but they're freaked out that it may happen before they figure out how to upload their consciousness into a giant data center.

was at a session with the top NUS AI experts yesterday, most of them Chinese, and this was true to a person. they discussed the future of AI as (a) a material buildout problem, (b) boringly relevant in workplaces, and (c) specifically a problem in education.
Because the Chinese researchers are basically normal engineers approaching AI as a difficult technical problem and not members of a psychotic cult that has spent the last 30 years trying to "build God."

US researchers tend to be atheists in the Christian tradition, so they crave materialist alternatives to Pascal’s Wager (Roko’s Basilisk), the Book of Revelation (Accelerando), Opus Dei (Rationalists) etc., & they have the zeal of converts I think China trends more calm about that sort of idea
There are vastly different national narratives. Feeling like you're catching up is seen as revolutionary enough. American firms have been on the hedonic treadmill since the end of WW2
I think the answer has something to do with why American newspace companies sound like they're bouncing between being sci-fi superheroes and supervillains while Chinese firms sound like this

I think "they're not allowed to" is actually sufficient. I can tag some 中国同s in the morning, but the political pressures are also career pressures. These won't be so much overt "don't say anything!" but rather "any concerns must go through proper channels".
