Here you can see the clear line from an infection (COVID) to new onset autoimmune disease (Celiac). This is a well-known pattern that plays out with many autoimmune diseases. For me, it was strep throat ➡️ psoriasis. Once you have one autoimmune disease, your risk of getting another increases.

"Long COVID has been devastating and life-altering. It led to my diagnosis of Celiac diseass —as COVID-19 can disrupt the gut microbiome." —Erin Kay, Founder of Claiming Disability shares why she strongly advocates for masking. www.instagram.com/p/DefAbKmJcg... #MaskTogetherAmerica

The debilitating chronic illness myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) is one of the most common bad outcomes of a Covid infection—including for this Olympian. If you’re left wondering “what even is ME?”, this article is a great, moving account. Do check it out—everyone deserves to understand this risk.

“Just having a conversation… can impact you afterwards. When I say impact you, you feel like you're dying basically.” Former Olympic sprinter Beth Dobbin describing post-exertional malaise the hallmark symptom of #ME.

this is what the “yA gOtTa LiVe YoUr LiFe” brigade fails to grasp after six years—yeah, i do, hopefully not with a debilitating but largely preventable disease that confines me to my bed for all but two hours a day!

This young Olympian had very mild infection but is now severely disabled. I have been asked why I still mask when death is now rare from COVID in Australia. It is not dying I am worried about.

This is the disease for which I research and advocate: #MECFS. Even mild presentation is life-changing, and this is what severe looks like. People are surprised so many of us were athletes. They want to believe this can only happen to people who were already unwell. www.bbc.com/sport/athlet...

From BethDobbin former Olympic athlete, now bedridden with #ME. Still classified as a psychiatric illness in some medical textbooks. Many people still choose to believe this to be the case until it hits family, friend or someone known to be mentally fit. Everyone is vulnerable. It wrecks your life.

1/2 Huge thanks to Olympic athlete Beth Dobbin for using her limited energy to share her story & raise awareness of the severely debilitating effects of ME & the lack of clear NHS pathways. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/athlet... We hear of situations like this all too often.

Think you’re healthy enough to fend off viruses? Are you in better shape than this Olympian? The best way to avoid joining the ranks of those of us with ME/CFS is to avoid catching airborne viruses like Covid 😷 And if you get sick, radical rest! Rest longer than you think you need.

Five years ago, Beth Dobbin was an Olympian Today, ME leaves her in bed 22 hours a day Even this interview could cost her months of health But she spoke anyway, because millions are suffering in silence, and she knows her voice might help them be heard www.bbc.com/sport/athlet...

"There is nothing out there. There is nowhere to go. You go to the GP and there's nowhere for them to send you to. It's really at the back of the queue as far as research, knowledge, expertise, funding." The Olympic sprinter now bedbound for 22 hours a day with #ME www.bbc.co.uk/sport/athlet...
