Holiday in the climate emergency. No that’s not AI or edited, just a snapshot I just took with my phone on Lacanau beach in France. What future will this boy grow up in? It is in our hands, but time is running out.

📣 Germany's close to reversing its opposition to mass surveillance & private message scanning, & backing the Chat Control bill. This could end private comms-& Signal-in the EU. Time's short and they're counting on obscurity: please let German politicians know how horrifying their reversal would be.

We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. signal.org/blog/pdfs/ge...

Western leaders have appeased Donald Trump since he returned to power, only to be hit with new demands after every concession. On Tuesday, Trump declared economic war on countries that regulate its tech companies. It’s time for the world to break from the US and aggressively target Silicon Valley.

World leaders must stop appeasing Donald Trump

Conceding to Trump’s demands only guarantees new threats. It’s time to reject the US and its tech companies.

Can we fucking stop with this? “One of the most unsettling questions of our times”?? Get in the sea. How about you interview the workers these lake boiling slop machines are replacing??? Do you think these PEOPLE suffer at all? www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

Can AIs suffer? Big tech and users grapple with one of most unsettling questions of our times

As first AI-led rights advocacy group is founded, industry is divided on whether models are, or can be, sentient

Massive growth in predatory publishing and low-quality journals, interacting with AI-assisted/written articles and peer reviews, will destroy the reliability of the entire scientific enterprise. Just as destructive as Trump defunding and ideological control – maybe more, since broadly international.

Today, our article "The entities enabling scientific fraud at scale are large, resilient, and growing rapidly" is finally published in PNAS. I hope that it proves to be a wake-up-call for the whole scientific community. reeserichardson.blog/2025/08/04/a...

I've learned so much from Melanie Mitchell's thoughtful columns. During a pivotal period when AI discourse generated more heat than light, her essays provided wise, evidence-based analysis covering remarkable breadth. This compelling column on role-playing's impact on LLM performance is an exemplar.

In my latest (and last!) column for Science’s Expert Voices series, I write about the reasons behind AI chatbots’ “deceptive” behaviors (and why Claude threatened a fictional CEO with blackmail). www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

🚨 New paper out! The first paper of my PhD was finally published on 1 May, Labour Day! Together with @ruth-mueller.bsky.social and @majahorst.bsky.social, we conducted a qualitative discourse analysis of 4 years of German newspaper coverage of AI. So, what is ‘AI’ in the news? 👇👇👇 #hype #AI

ONLINE FIRST & OPEN ACCESS! This study by @dominiclammar.bsky.social, @majahorst.bsky.social, and @ruth-mueller.bsky.social shows AI media coverage in Germany reinforces hype through broad future narratives, even within specific application contexts. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

This is surely the right take. (1) Are people truly only finding out about LibGen now? (2) How did a site that has, inter alia, been the subject of multiple lawsuits from the absolute worst academic publishers (elsevier!!) suddenly become the focus of our anxiety about AI data scraping?

Theresa O'Keefe 🍉@treesaw.bsky.social · last yr.

Libgen was great and pirate sites aren't the issue here. Academic publishing houses are doing this too - handing over our work to train AI and doing so without our consent.

Ok, quick thread on why DeepSeek is blowing up assumptions about LLMs and maybe the whole (U.S.) AI industry. DeepSeek is an AI lab funded by a Chinese hedge fund, their AI code is open source, meaning freely available to use, which most big U.S. models (aside from Meta’s) are not. That’s the start…
