I listed a cargo bike for sale at the beginning of the summer, thinking the timing would be right for people interested in warm weather adventures. Crickets, then 8 inbounds the past 2 weeks. Turns out everyone is shopping for new school commutes. Bikes are infrastructure.

This is wildly irresponsible. Even if there are legit uses (modeling flooding or wildfire devastation, maybe), they could drastically cut down on misinformation abuse by rendering in a lower-res illustration style. Also, watermark the hell out of it and host an image checker service.

New from 404 Media: Google Earth has introduced an AI feature that lets anyone fabricate completely bullshit satellite images. In our own tests, we added a “bomb blast and crater” to an area of Los Angeles. This is a misinformation time bomb, will 100% be abused www.404media.co/google-earth...

First impressions after 24 hours with the @blackskyweb.xyz Android app: 1. Visual design is pretty straightforward, but they've found ways to show a bit more content and less chrome. It's nice! 2. Loading and switching views is noticeably snappier. 3. A few bugs, likely related to federation.

Everyone complaining about the new Washington Ave connector has never tried to get a 3 year old across 6 lanes of traffic and it shows.

ATProto builders, I've been having some really positive conversations with multiple funders who want to invest in the ecosystem. The tides are shifting, the interest is here. But, we need to talk. 👇

Hot take of the day: with the ballooning of SUVs and dangerous driving, true cycle paths (even if fewer miles of them) will have a bigger impact than bike lanes. *personal opinion only

I need to dig 40 post holes for trail network signage this fall. Has anyone trained a dog to dig on command? If it helps, I have the best doggo in the world.

🛑 The way we were taught to think: "We should provide universal [public good X], but how will we pay for it?" 🟢 The way we must learn to think: "Because [public good X] should be universally provided, we will work to rewrite the rules so that we can always pay for it, no matter what."

Some principles for euthanizing the rentier in a renewed democracy. 🧵 Rather than asking how to protect democracy from finance, we must ask how to redesign finance so that democratic commitments become the highest-priority promises in the system.

Ben Franklin Bridge party was an absolute madhouse. The hours were too short to accommodate all the demand. Wall to wall people going across, and a standstill at the exits bottlenecked by food truck lines. We treat walking like a half-day spectacle, and make it terrible the other 364.5.

Are you working with civic open data? Or other kinds of cool data? Reach out! There already are some cool projects for geo/sat and astronomy data — making dataset metadata available and searchable in a decentralised yet unified way — and we want to help more of them emerge!

I'm stuck in Scandinavia, but found a timely read: "Do not be the least frightened to be called social democrats; it is no shame. Know that socialist means 'society improver' and what can be more beautiful than to make a rotten society better." Happy 4th, America! medium.com/@triciawang/...
