I'm a fledgling author, in the process of writing and self-publishing my first novel, a Regency/Fantasy crossover titled #Ellamir 🇬🇧 | He/Him | 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ Ally | 🚫 Gen AI Bio, Contact & Newsletter: www.camalin.net (Also known as Algernon/Alg1e)

#LitHodgepodge | 8 Very interesting to consider the first question from Ella's perspective. She has reason - whether she's considered it or not - to wonder what her lifespan may be, as it's not likely to be the same as her contemporaries... So she'd probably far prefer to know "when" #Ellamir

#LitHodgepodge 8 Thinking from the perspective of one (or more) of your characters, choose one (or more!) of these “would you rather” questions and provide an answer. Feel free to explain your character’s response. #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #WriteSky

THURSDAY THRIFTED THERAPY

[Graphic of an old-timey bearded man sitting and leaning his arm against a barrel with a tiny frog crawling up its side]

Prompt:
8 | Answer one (or more) of these “would you rather” questions as your character:
🪦 Would you rather know when or how you’re going to die?
🧠 Would you rather have a perfect memory or be able to forget anything you wanted at will?
⏳ Would you rather time travel to the past or future?
💔 Would you rather never be able to show emotions or never be able to hide them?

[Graphic of talking crow]
“Would you rather” is a classic icebreaker which I doubt requires explanation. Surely you’ve been asked at some point whether you would rather fight 100 duck-sized elephants or one elephant-sized duck? If you chose the latter, you are clearly unacquainted with very many ducks.

@pamelajeong.bsky.social Your profile bio (crochet and ukulele) has eerie echoes of when I used to work in a country pub that had a huge round table in one corner: a group of ladies held a knitting circle there, it was very cute and they were much valued among the regulars. 🧵1/2

in Dogwood I use a lot of run-on sentences, and pair them with sentence fragments. I'm not even kidding when i say the cadence of my Dogwood voice is not that far off from that one "worst sex scene" that ends with the 2-word sentence "Like Zoro." #LitHodgepodge CW snip about a deadly flood

CRRKKKTTsshhhhh!
Attention Swallowsaw! The weather service has issued a flash flood warning for the following areas—

Foaming, leaping, crashing, reaching—hundreds of thousands of gallons of wild, raging brown river water exploding out of the pine forest, carrying trees and bits of houses, taking out the speakers, smashing into the rows and rows of parked vehicles, slamming them into one another like dominoes before surging over them, swallowing them, flinging them up and sideways, into the concession stand, against the chain-link fence, all those people scrambling and swept up and screaming, and the river just gushing, filling up the space between the hills before rushing on, chasing gravity.

Tricky because narrative voice feels ad hoc, but word choice is key, long words suit some but not others, contractions the same, etc. Usually for me voice is filtered through mood first. In this example Elara is hurried and rather...annoyed. 1/2 #LitHodgepodge 7 #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

She glanced around the room. Where the Hell was her stuff? The place looked like a bomb site, clothing strewn like rubble amongst the sparse furniture. The bed which dominated the small space despite being tucked into the corner, was a mess. She had to fish her phone out from under a condom wrapper and some empty chip packets. A tap of the screen and she groaned at the low battery warning, before shoving it onto the charging pad.
She padded to the kitchenette. The counter top lined the wall to her right, peppered with coffee dust from Jamie’s old school bean grinder and a basin still filled with dirty mugs

I genuinely have no idea how successful this snippet is in conveying the narrative voice of the main character, but first person POV is not my strong suit. What do you think, dear reader? #LitHodgepodge

After hanging up, I fold the flyer into quarters and tuck it into my purse. Instinctively, I look up and down the street before crossing.
That’s when I catch it.
A man’s silhouette a few yards away, facing me, and his racing heart.
A decade of undeath cannot erase the acute sense of danger honed by a childhood of warnings. Don’t take candy from strangers. Don’t walk anywhere alone at night, especially not in a skirt that short. Don’t disrespect or argue with men, because that will make them angry, and they’ll hurt you when they’re angry. My mother made sure I grew up attuned to the nuances of body language, to the small shifts in someone’s tone or expression. I learned to read tension in the air and the intent in a person’s stance.
But where once the instinct to fight or flee would rear its head, all of my predator’s senses sharpen instead. My surroundings stand out in vivid detail, while the slight huff of the man’s breath reaches my ears and the smell of tobacco smoke drifts from him toward me. Hunger reverberates through my core, ravenous, eager. Whoever he is, whatever his intentions, he has no chance.

A snippet from Ellamir by Cameron A Malin:
Eminent thought she may be, Ella was not ignorant of the good fortune and privilege of her birth. The only child of a most affectionate and indulgent father, all the more indulgent for the loss of her mother at too early an age to be remembered, she had grown up with the habit of doing just as she wished and ordering her father's household just as she liked. His gentle, anxious and uncertain nature left an absence of authority into which Ella's strong-willed influence had naturally extruded, so that not long after her sixteenth birthday she had begun to assume many household responsibilities, and was now, at one and twenty, quite established as the principal person in the management of Penmere, their comfortable estate. She understood perfectly well that providence had been kind to her, yet nonetheless she was pleased with her own achievements and, having been doted on by her surviving parent and the subject of much flattery by her contemporaries - some of it sincere - she had become inclined to think rather too well of herself.

#LitHodgepodge | 6 Brother Nicholls is my favourite archetype in #Ellamir: the unattractive, unwelcome suitor, à la Mr Collins in Pride & Prejudice. Though an appalling charlatan and hypocrite, and a dangerous misogynist, he's also foolish and obsequious and frequently misuses words to comic effect

A snippet from Ellamir by Cameron A Malin:
Now quite certain of his patroness' familiarity with Miss Oakhall's very serious flaws, upset by revisiting that most unfortunate encounter and fortified by frequent sips of his second large glass of gin, Brother Nicholls found himself in sudden passionate agreement and set about abusing the unscrupulous young woman with surprising alacrity, and in the most shocking terms.
"Decidedly untoward!" he cried, "Leading astray The Lady's sheep - impressionable young women, and good observant men too, with her… her undulating bosom! Abject humiliation… days suffered of impure thoughts and obscene debasement! Curse her for a meretricious croquette, the hussy!"
Lady Lamont was rarely deprived of the power of speech, but this outburst left her so astonished that, for a moment, she could do nothing but look back at him with widened eyes and raised eyebrows.
"Croquette, Brother Nicholls?" she said at last.
"Oh! do forgive me, Lady Lamont," gasped the Brother, recollecting himself and mopping his brow, "I speak in conjecture, you understand… as to the likely evils of involvement with such a person…"

#LitHodgepodge | 5 "Perfect happiness" is particularly apt for my #JaneAusten style Regency X High Fantasy crossover, as most if not all of Austen's stories conclude with at least two characters achieving it, usually through matrimony. I've tried to nuance this a bit in #Ellamir... 🧵1/3

Kraghtol ignored the dwarf and followed the Spoken One. In the center of the hall, elevated on a granite socket at least ten meters in diameter, was a giant stone sculpture showing an incredibly detailed landscape. Different parts of the sculpture used various kinds of colored stone. The river running through it, for example, was made of a glittering blue gemstone. Sapphire perhaps?

children. He deftly raised the youngster from the landing and with a couple gentle swings, delivered her across to be caught by Rushak. He threw the rope back and Drisal gave it to the next child. Working in
concert, the brothers were like one being, each one's actions timed perfectly to the other. Each child in succession found escape, the oldest wearing slings
carrying infants, and Lyndina last. By the time
Rushak set her on her feet, the landing she'd swung from was burning. Drisal had disappeared. Rushak lowered Lyndina and the children from the landing in
baskets normally used for hauling goods into the felara. Once aground, she and the grateful parents shooed the children ahead as they fled toward Talman
and the others. Rushak watched them a moment, and then disappeared inside.

#WIPSnips -Tangled Web (TaMB 3)- Subbed 'lift' because my use of elevator was too spoilery. CW: foul language Context: These are Russian mob members, fleeing from a fight with the Irish mob, not realizing they have a MUCH bigger problem. That problem being Portia. My Books: pjccahill.carrd.co

"FUCK YOU, IRISH PIGS!" screamed in English as he unloaded his pistol with frantic, random bursts all over that side of the warehouse.
His gun clicked, empty, but he kept swinging his arm and squeezing the trigger, starting to hyperventilate.
And then a voice replied, and it filled all three of them with a primal level of terror that cut through their nerves and thoughts, leaving them stone-still and cold in their own skin. Even Lev turned into a statue of pure terror.
It had to be some kind of voice, the words were clear, but the sound was utterly inhuman. Guttural, resonant, and horrendously loud from behind them, completely opposite the doorway.
"Not Irish. Not a pig."
Lev twisted, his arm swinging like a branch. The pitiful click of his trigger clicking continued as he aimed at the... thing shaped like a person in the shadows, too far from any windows to be clearer than a dark mass in the gloom.
Fyodor and Sergei peeked around corners of their cover. They saw the shadow start to lift its arms to the sides.
"Thank you for making such a mess. No one will look for you now."

Welcome to a new week of #WIPSnips! The word for September 7th is "elevator" which is what I've been spending all week waiting forever on and packed into like a sardine at Dragon Con. 😂 #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Using the ‘lift’ instead of ‘elevator’, Gloria cooks a ‘please don’t be mad at me’ meal for her wife Isley. #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

On the top left corner of the front door, a blue light pinged and Gloria looked up with excitement. Isley had entered the hyper-lift. It would now be a smooth descent that took twenty-thirty minutes, depending on stops, and then they'd be together. That was more than enough time to finish the cream of sweet potato soup and put the vanilla panna cottas in the fridge. Isley's sweet tooth was larger and more robust than her actual teeth.

Gloria busied herself with cooking. Vivid orange smears covered the normally pristine white worktops but it was a relief to see some colour in the room. Gloria had even spent a lot of credits on real flowers that were already wilting under the harsh lights. The florist had told her they were sunflowers but Gloria had liked them as the petals were the same colour as Isley's eyes.

Hi hi, #WIPSnips, it's been a while! It's got to be ✨vibes✨ today - no elevators in my Regency x High Fantasy crossover novel #Ellamir (and if there were, they'd be lifts!) so instead, we find Ella just about to go where an elevator might take you: upstairs. But things are about to get weird...

A snippet from Ellamir by Cameron A Malin:
“Oh, damn Keaning to the hells,” Ella muttered, intended only for herself but, in fact, audible enough to bring the footman around the corner.
“May I light a room for you, Miss Ellamir?” he asked, too professional to appear surprised to find her in the darkened passageway.
“No,” said Ella, pushing aside her churning thoughts for a moment, “thank you, Thomson, but I shall go upstairs. Please ask Mary to attend me in a moment.” She was turning away from the footman’s acquiescent bow when something cut through the silence of the somnolent house, a sound that froze her to the spot, cocking her head sharply. “Do you hear that?” she asked.
“I hear nothing, ma’am,” said Thomson after a moment.
“Nothing at all?”
“No, ma’am.”
It was clearly audible to her, however; an odd note, high and clear, carried in through an open window from the garden beyond. Ella took a step along the passage, following as if called, and heard the voices - for a shifting cadence and joining harmony made it suddenly apparent that she was hearing a growing choir of united voices - with a sudden, shocking jolt of recognition. It was a sound she knew, unheard for many years but unmistakably familiar, a distant sound from her childhood, calling to her again from far across the intervening years: the stars were singing.
