When I turn back to face Veronica again, she’s very visibly blushing behind her large glasses. “Don’t worry,” I tell her with a breezy wave of my hand, more for the sake of our little performance than for her. “It’s a joke. My crushes only last, like, an hour. Tops.”
Orla cackles in the background. “Wade, the day you top someone for a whole hour is the day—”
“The day you finally let someone top you?”

Night of the Full Moon The criminal underworld sees Ratree as a lone wolf, elusive, working to protect her brother and the smuggling organisation they run. Everyone has ideas about her. She has other plans.

The door opens before Talay knocks and Ratree pulls him in, holding him tight. She is shaking. She held it together for Gan, but he has Earth and Earth is so much better at these things.

Talay holds her close to him and rubs her back to calm her. “It’s alright, phi. I’m safe. We’re all safe.”

She buries her head against his neck.

He remembers what Earth said, that day during the security review, how Ratree and Gan would act on their training missions. “Gan and I were looking out for each other the whole time. He’s less spectacular in his protection than you,” he kisses her head tenderly, “but I was never in danger thanks to him.”

She pulls back and gulps down air. She remembers the small child so scared of the bullies and how she’d climb onto his bed in the middle of the night to hold him while he cried, Earth hanging on to him too, like all of their lives depended on this closeness, like they could keep the shadows at bay a while longer as long as none of them let go.

Talay watches her, seeing the depth of emotion but not understanding its whys.

“Can you tell me?” he asks.

She crumples to the ground and sobs. He holds her like he’ll never let go.

Strope prodded at the remains of the boiled chicken. “Even I wouldn’t eat that. And I’ve eaten...well you know what I’ve eaten!”

“Mud rat?”

“Yes, alright. The mud rat,” Strope admitted.

“Won’t you even try the sauce?”

“Why not one of these rice balls? They look…vivid.”

Halla reached out for one at the same time, all three of the spices she’d rolled them in had smelt interesting. The first, and only mouthful, was filled with instant regret. A wad of cinnamon was stuck inside the rice and exploded in her mouth; filling her throat. Every trace of moisture was replaced by the clogging sensation of the spice. Pressing her palms on the table, Halla coughed out as much of the cinnamon as possible then reached for some water.

Strope dropped the rice ball. “Are you alright? Here,” he refilled her mug. “Let's go out for food.”

Halla, still bent over the table, wiped her mouth and gestured at the food. “And what about all this?”

A spark burst from Strope's finger. “I could burn it?"

"Thanks, Nina," he said, putting the mirror down.

"Look at you, looking like a person rather than a swamp rat now," Adrian commented, and Judah nearly shot back a biting comment, were it not for the teasing glint in the other man's eye.

"Leave him be, you menace," Nina growled.

"Oh, come on," Adrian chuckled. "Judah here is perfectly capable of fighting his own battles, isn't he?"

Judah briefly glared at him, but Adrian's grin only grew. The teasing glint was a challenging one now.

And Judah decided then and there that he would rise to it.

"I can," he confirmed, looking at Nina. "There's no need to baby me. I've been on my own since I was 14."

A brief flash of different emotions flitted across Nina's face. Pity—which Judah abhorred—worry—which wasn't so bad—regret—which was unexpected—acceptance—which was what he'd been looking for—and lastly, amusement.

"You're right," she said, a smirk playing around her lips. "You're a grown man; you can handle him just fine."

All Halla and Strope want is a cosy life after they unexpectedly find each other. Unfortunately, they're kept apart by a vengeful wizard, a bureaucratic god and invisible river monsters. #SumLuv (snip for their first kiss)

"The comb," she fiddled it from her hair. "Was it really a thank you present as a friend or something…something more?"

For a moment, Strope was silent and then he coughed awkwardly. "I got you it as a present for a friend but I…I wasn't sure if there could be something more. I hoped."

Halla put the comb back in her hair and leaned forwards. His hope made her decision easier. "You have given me the hope for a life I thought I'd never have."

His breath was on her cheek. It was warm and still smelt of beer. Strope hesitated before turning his head to one side. He'd become a darkness that Halla yearned to slip into. "Are you sure?"

Words were pointless. Too many had been said and Halla let her lips touch his. It was as soft and as unexpected as their earlier embrace. A tentative peck became a river of hurried dotted kisses over each others faces and then Strope moved down her neck. One hand lost in her hair and the other clasping her to his chest.

Together, they embraced hope in the darkness.

Currently imprisoned, Halla thinks about the last time she could easily see the sky. #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Halla's only comfort was that she could see part of the sky. So long as her face was against the bars and she angled her head in just the right way. Slithers of pink light were emerging and she cast her memory back to a morning before she'd arrived here.

Her last true sunrise. Pink clouds against orange sky. Bright white rays of sunlight that shot through the gaps and pierced her sight. Halla had done her best to remember every part of it. The way the leafless trees had tried to grasp at the horizon like wizened fingers. Or the trudge of reluctant carts that inched their way towards Dragaul. The walls had eventually loomed over and blocked even the clouds. Halla had turned her back on the city and silently hoped that her summoning here would be reprieved and she could go back home. But her hopes came to nothing and soon the heavy doors of Dragaul had slammed in her face and blocked the sunrise for ever.

"I miss the sun," she whispered. Her throat hurt even uttering this small hope.

I tried to swallow and couldn’t. Peters’ bosses had traded away our lives and the people’s freedom for an illusion of safety promised to them by a man who dealt in smoke and mirrors. Anthony could launch as many planes as he wanted, and they could sacrifice innocents until the streets were bare—their security amounted to no more than a mirage on the horizon, a false hope waiting to dissolve.

“And where’s it going now?” Peters asked.

Anthony waved his hand. “Don’t worry about it, Lieutenant Colonel. Music City is safe, thanks to you.”

The plane turned west, reached cruising altitude, and became yet another star in the sky.

Birdsinger squinted into the morning sun.
Below them, all the treetops in Sheltria lay spread like a textured woolen blanket of many colors. Sporadic birdsong evoked springtime, when the birds had been so many that their mighty chorus overflowed the trees and filled the sky. But most had flown early this year. A harsh winter threatened. The wind over the treetops scoured Birdsinger's face; its cold bored into their ears. The sun's thin warmth was little comfort while they looked into the distance, for the eastern haze had thickened and dimmed the
jagged HORIZON. But Birdsinger smiled, grateful as always watching the hardy jays wheel and call, flashing vivid blue against the fiery colors of the canopy beneath them. Not many were blessed so, with this life among the flying birds.

By dawn, Kenneth managed to drag himself into a deckchair to watch Newpier’s shores swim into view, just as the sun was rising. His polished ivory skin reflected the golden glow of the sky, a salty sea-breeze fanned his face, and it would all have been very pleasant had he not felt so awful and the lieutenant from the night before hadn’t tripped over his shins when he tried to stretch his legs.

Something caught his attention, jutting from the cliffs on the horizon; a stone lighthouse built into the rocks themselves and projecting high above them. He could tell at once it was a large structure, but only when the boat drew close enough for him to make out trees and houses to compare it to did he have a full sense of its scale.

“Everlasting above!” Kenneth cried, trying to rise from his chair, before a bout of dizziness forced him back down again. His fingers grabbed the pink muslin sleeve of Jo’s dress in excitement. “Am I so sick I’m hallucinating, or is that a thousand feet tall?”

“O-only five hundred,” came a nervous voice from behind him. “Or three if you count the clifftop as its base.”

Karl would get him home safely. Strope's muscles twisted and his spine stretched.

Strope screamed.

The big man would look after him.

Cailo whimpered.

He was safe. He was safe.

He was Cailo.

Cailo howled out the last of his pain and panted rapidly after the exertion of leaving the big body. He was swaddled in thick material that smelled of meat but he could tell there was nothing edible. Another smell was recognisable, one that always calmed him down. It was warm and rich but also had a lingering harshness underneath. Fresh beer and old ale. That was the scent of the big man.

He padded out of the material and sniffed at the air. The urge to run home was strong but he'd learned that many people saw him in this form and deemed him a worthy prize. To some, dog meat was an exotic meal and to others he could be a useful tool. For that reason, Cailo clung to the big man's side and waited for him to move.

The big man nodded; the indication to run.

“He’s not what you think,” Yago said, interrupting her intrusive rumination. “I know he seems … like he might be someone you know. It’s just to fuck with you.” He removed the skewer again, did another sniff check, and prodded the end piece with a small metal fork.
“Fuck with me? Why? Why are you telling me this?”
“Because I’m not an asshole,” he said, working the chunk from the skewer with his fork. “I mean, I am kind of an asshole, but I can’t get behind fucking with people just to fuck with them.”

Felix wished he was a more powerful witch. If he could cast a time-turning spell that undid everything from the past few days, he would in a heartbeat. That’s not how his magic worked. Reversing time for a smashed pumpkin was something he could handle. He couldn’t reverse heartbreak.

More vibes, two forms of responses to heartbreak. Alitzah wants revenge and Cailo wants to wallow in sadness. #WIPSnips ##Writesky

“But why?” Cailo removed his hands and stared at Alitzah. “Why tell me you knew when you didn’t.”

“So you’d save my home from the flames. Though I didn’t think you’d be able to manage that.”

She was so blunt in her honesty that Cailo felt rather sick. And then she spoke again, her voice flat but her words sadder.

“And don’t you think I want to find Halla as well? My father and brother are dead. My sister is missing. Halla is my cousin, even if she is a bastard. Which is why I’m going to Arktos to seek justice from Lady Carina. She may know where Halla ended up and I can have what's left of my family. ”

More guilt washed over Cailo, but not for what he’d done to Halla but of how he’d never considered Alitzah. Of course she’d lost far more than he’d ever had but, rather than run and hide, she wanted to confront and resolve her problems at the earliest instance. Maybe if he had half her perseverance then he’d have already found Halla.
