The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

Could new bus shelter roofs help New Yorkers stay cool in extreme heat? We're testing a few in Brownsville to find out: a green roof covered with native plants, and reflective roofs covered with low-cost, heat-resilient film.

She was brilliant and sharp and warm - three things that very rarely go together. We were Twitter friends for years and she was one of those steadfastly moral and compassionate voices who made every day online nicer place to be. I am so deeply sorry to read this www.theguardian.com/books/2026/s...

Me trying to explain how the shit hit the fan in Germany this week without despairing. My attempt to end on a lighter note however was eventually undermined by @sturdyalex.bsky.social and rightly so. It was an interesting chat in spite of everything. Tx for having me.

So the huge amount of money coming into our country from tourists who attend our theatres (writers, directors, actors) or our art galleries (artists, art historians) or our museums and historic buildings (historians, archaeologists) are not worth anything to us? Our TV and film exports worthless?

It bugs me that we're normalising the idea that there's something wrong with long documents, or that they're not "worth" our time. There is huge value in careful thought, in detail and nuance, in exploration, and in the experiential journey that goes alongside that.

As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now. NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.
