“Search engine” is actually a terrible thing to use AI for. It gives results that look plausible very quickly, often mostly right, and in order to check them you have to do more & different work that feels like a waste when results are kind of right, so you just trust the thing because it’s easier

I keep being asked about if I'm doing a book: 1. Yes! Portfolio/Penguin Random House 2. It's called The Hater's Guide To Silicon Valley 3. It's out July 2027. 4. It is currently going through edits! I have written it between podcasts/newsletters. I have been very busy!
Please be vocal about not using AI. We have to normalize it. No "I'm not going to say that because it should be assumed. I'm not going to give them this". We don't have time for that shit ideological shit right now. NOW is the time to capitalize on waning favorability. Ppl want human made

Have you seen any reporting on how solar power generation in the USA is 5 times higher than it was in 2020 in mainstream outlets? If not, why do you think this is not being widely covered the same way other large technological changes are?
Official monthly data is in today, and US solar power generation hit a new record high, up 20% compared to this time last year!
Apparently ICE arrests are at an all-time high and I'm guessing they've managed that by decentralizing. Focus on a specific urban area, and you get a lot of targeted resistance. Anyway, helpful reminder that ICE are literally everywhere and we should all be watching out for our neighbors.
If you live in an area that has pockets of immigrants, and you think nothing is happening with ICE, you are probably wrong. I've been hearing about things happening EVERYWHERE right now.

Any opposition politician who is serious about justice needs to be running on "abolish and prosecute."
"ICE tactics, already sadistic, are looking increasingly like torture," writes @judith-levine.bsky.social. "The slim avenues to legal recourse and the refusal of transparency or accountability by the perpetrators of de jure and de facto torture are driving detainees to desperate measures..."
There’s an aggressively paid for influence op going on right now to defend AI slop as art and protected speech across platforms. AI execs realize they have a problem and don’t wanna get Marie Antoinette’d. The free ChatGPT trip is the tip of the iceberg. First person to nail it down gets a Pulitzer.

Gary, Indiana is a predominantly Black, relatively poor, post-industrial city with a shrinking population.

In my opinion, a failure to understand the white-hot rage so many people feel about ICE's campaign of terror and oppression is what has taken some establishment Dems by surprise in their primaries. Abolish ICE and Nuremberg 2.0 is basically the floor for what the Dem electorate is demanding.
There are going to be Democrats who say we shouldn’t rip it all out — it’s already built, we have other priorities — but removing the visible signs of Trumpism is absolutely necessary.
The vandalism and desecration of the White House isn't just vanity and it's not trivial. It's caesarism, as in literally what Julius Caesar did to the symbolic architecture of civic republicanism. Our national iconography matters and allowing the disfiguring of it to persist is a substantive harm.
Excellent read. "AI Overview offers the seductive promise that the messy, effortful, contestable business of finding things out [...] can be replaced by a single, confident, algorithmically fluent paragraph." www.bostonreview.net/articles/wha...

When you hear "NVIDIA" and "data center" in the same breath, know that this person is not talking about VOIP or Instagram or online banking or online gaming, they are explicitly talking about generative AI services. These data centers aren't useful for anything else.
The biggest mistake that people made about the AI bubble is assuming that the rich and powerful are smart, better-informed or somehow intellectually superior. Yes, they'd absolutely spend all this money without really knowing if it would work! Everyone around them said it would

Meltwater, a poetry collection by @cwahmanholm.bsky.social, illuminates just what you are describing with deft and expansive tenderness, dread, and wonder. Here’s one of several prose poems in the book titled “Glacier,” which I think about often.

Not a conspiracy. The tech industry generally targets edtech and defense. General users are important, but the real, long term cash flow is in education and defense. They will often pour lots of money in, and once they have enough investment it's harder for them to pull out.
My sounds-like-conspiracy-theory-but-is-probably-true take is slopAI firms are deliberately targeting education sector; it’s underfunded & weakly protected & by becoming standard there they create generations of dependent users which is only thing that can stop inevitable financial bubble bursting
Wow. Proponents of the ICE taser gloves are openly saying that one reason they love the gloves is that they doesn’t leave any marks or proof that they were used, making it harder for people to sue when they’re shocked excessively.
