wild to be living in a world with live-streamed state executions and legal daylight kidnappings, but every time you turn around some loser is saying, hey man, what if art were completely frictionless? what if we killed even the possibility of human connection??

a thing about carrie, the novel, is that carrie *is* weird and judgmental and unpleasant to deal with. characters have to suppress their irritation with her, and this is important because it's easy to reach out to someone who conforms to social norms. it's harder to do that to a girl who doesn't.

this is the ultimate end point of capitalism, ai will completely atomize everyone and there will be zero shared experiences. there will be no culture, only pure consumption. this must be resisted

brain, i understand that you'd rather do Preferred Activity, but right now we have to do Task. if we finish task we can do Preferred Activity WITHOUT feeling weighed down by the need to do Task. do you see how that works ah it's biting me my brain is biting me

It is okay to let people dislike things. It is also okay to let them vent their dislike in public and on social media. It is okay to dislike things without having a moral and political reason for doing so. I need you all to please stop tying your entire identities up in the things you consume.

It's also worth noting that both those groups believe that Trump's voters need to be coddled and pandered to. That's not necessarily true: they're responding to the aesthetics of strength (as sold in fascism). I would bet Ossoff's strident authority is probably more effective at drawing them in

It's not hard. Both Yglesias moderates and Khanna leftists give MAGA politicians legitimacy because they want MAGA's base. Ossoff simply does not give a shit about the MAGA base, which allows him to speak with fierce clarity about MAGA politicians. He is willing to bet on an anti-MAGA majority.

I mean I consume media by myself all the time, especially before I had access to the internet and had no nerd friends - the difference is when you consume media made by other humans you feel less alone, when you consume artificial media made only for you, that's when you're going to lose your mind

This. And there seems to be a strange desire to leapfrog human experience like empathy and instead assert that a “model” of pain, which, I guess, is an artificial reflection or representation of pain, not a lived experience or event, is humanity’s achievement of “understanding” pain? How odd.

If inanimate objects which show patterns of pain (whatever that means) have a claim to suffering isn't that just serving companies? My laptop can run a weather model and display patterns of rain, but it's not going to have water damage. There's an ontological difference between model & phenomenon.

My favorite part of @josie.zone’s #beckbook. I started this book about the life and music of Beck wanting to know “what happened” at the turn of the century that made his music simultaneously more personal but less expressive. I ended this book wanting him (and all of us) to be okay.

Not to take away from celebrating Carson, but she's a "former professor" here in large part because the university shut down her department and cancelled its classes. What pride does the institution claim now—years later—when austerity is forcing other scholars out? What does that 'pride' do?

Former McGill professor Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. 🏆 Awarded “for her bold and inventive oeuvre", she has helped redefine contemporary literature through poetry, essays, translation and criticism. Congratulations! ➡️ mcgill.ca/x/5HS

It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.
