In other Michigan news, the state looks set to elect it's first transgender lawmaker. Joanna Whaley won her Democratic primary and will compete in November for a state house seat, beating a primary opponent who tried and failed to disqualify her for not running under her deadname

One of the great joys of my adult life has been realizing that I can just pick up a new skill every so often, take a fun little class in it weekly for a year or two, and simply enjoy meeting people and getting medium proficient and not attempting to become professional in it at all!

Maybe turn off video autoplay today: Settings > Content and media > Autoplay videos and GIFs Toggle off.

The toggle for Autoplay videos and GIFs in the Bluesky app.

Little budget tip for grads of Canadian universities—many alumni associations have a corporate discount code for ViaRail (15% off)! It definitely adds up, especially if you suddenly have to, say, book a last-minute train from Montréal to Southern Ontario.

I don't even know what to say. This is real, this is true, so, like, thank you all, from the bottom of my heart. This took over 25 years to happen so if there's any lesson here it's either "keep at it, who knows" or "many people are divorced"

image of a gold record superimposed on part of Vaughan Oliver's iconic cover for the Mountain Goats' "Tallahassee" album, with a banner beneath it showing the entire album cover, an RIAA seal, and the text: Presented to THE MOUNTAIN GOATS to commemorate the RIAA Gold certification of more than 500,000 copies of the 4AD single "No Children"

the biggest and best movie of the year revolves around the perils and horrors that come with sacrificing a trans life in the name of a short term victory

has anyone unpacked christopher nolan casting a trans person to be the distraction sacrifice for a trojan horse to enter, and then destroy, civilization

I'm looking to interview anyone who has worked at an electronics assembly (components or systems) factory, anywhere in the world, before 1990. I can offer $100CAD / hour, though I don't think my questions will run the full hour. If you know anyone who is still able and willing to answer, plz lmk

This isn't directly what Kate is talking about here (different country/context!), but I have a couple friends who are pregnant right now in Québec, and the provincial govt refusing to cover COVID-19 boosters for pregnant people makes me incandescently angry as a repro justice issue. Go buy the book!

My reason for frustration (and # 2) is that vague fear IMO spreads fear vs figuring out what's up and trying to address it. For ex, I know several attacks on places of worship were tied to people who had did hateful things nearby (like write the n-word on an Indian resto)—broader right-wing stuff!

A thing that is really frustrating me about some of the coverage on this is that 1) "suspicious fires" happen in Montréal often (like, REALLY often—mob, insurance, arson, etc), 2) there seems to be an inability to hold that multiple things can be true at once, and 3) we don't know what happened!

The owners of a Montreal kosher restaurant destroyed in an early Saturday morning fire say they are devastated by the loss but determined to rebuild as the police investigation continues.

I don't like that feel like I keep repeating this bc of several news stories, but: If you are feeling triggered, upset, like stuff's a bit too close to home, etc by the Rep Max Miller news + discourse—I see you, I care about you, and I hope you can find some care and gentleness today.

Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) previously denied a report, also alleged in court records, that he pushed a girl down a flight of stairs in high school. But the woman recently told me the alleged incident remains "one of the more traumatic nights of my life." Inside the investigation: ow.ly/8xU450ZpaNp

Assault, misogyny, verbal threats: Records detail new allegations against Rep. Max Miller

Police reports and filings in a bitter custody dispute raise new questions about the conduct of an Ohio Republican as he campaigns for a third term.
