Figure skating world championships were considered to be for men only until 1902, when Madge Syers showed up and took home silver and the ISU went "whooooops guess we need to segregate them." It happened again in 1992 Olympic skeet shooting: Zhang Shan took gold and then they segregated the event.

Figure skater Madge Syers, doing a one-foot glideZhang Shan, Olympic gold medalist in skeet shooting, pictured wearing goggles and with several, uh, shotgun casings? in the air in front of her. Look, I know figure skating words for the most part but not skeet shooting ones.

I could have picked one of the pictures of her with her gun but the ones without Getty copyright on them were all potato-quality, and also I probably would have used the wrong gun word there too.

A reminder that women’s sports are kept separate from men’s not to protect women from always losing to men, but rather to ensure that no man ever loses to a woman. I’m not making this up; that’s literally the reason.

Do you think most of us wanted to be at odds with the largest progressive party here? God no, we've all grown up watching in-fighting and having it shape our sense of what we don't want from politics here, but this is one of those ethical lines in the sand we can't walk away from.

Was surprised to see this: List of orgs who were against making the ban permanent: Alder Hey children's gender service. The Royal College of General Practitioners The British Medical Association The Royal College of Psychiatrists

“Most trans kids will survive. But many of us will have to survive knowing that there are no institutions in Britain that will protect us … We will have to find more ways to protect ourselves and each other.” Listen to the young trans people who are fighting for their lives, freedom and community.

Reposting this in light of today's appalling ban on puberty blockers by Wes Streeting after the farcical sham of a consultation process. If treatment for one group is denied to another that has nothing to do with patient safety, but everything to do with politics. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I treat transgender children – banning puberty blockers is not a decision for politicians to make | Aidan Kelly

Decisions around the tiny minority for whom the option could be helpful should be made by clinicians, not Wes Streeting, says clinical psychologist Aidan Kelly

Labour’s manifesto promised to “remove indignities for trans people”, yet the government’s ban on puberty blockers adopts the Tories’ politicised unevidenced approach. Young people — cis & trans — must have access to healthcare they need. I stand firmly with the trans community.

Has half the legislation planned for NI this year failed to appear? Leader of the Opposition and SDLP MLA Matthew O’Toole claimed that the Executive will not deliver on the legislative programme for 2024 that was presented to the Assembly and that barely half of the 18 Bills scheduled will appear

Claim: The Executive will not deliver on the legislative programme for 2024 that was presented to the Assembly. Barely half of the 18 Bills scheduled will appear

Verdict: Accurate

The Alliance Party may want to reconsider citing the proposed clinical trial for access to puberty blockers This Council of Europe report (UK member) states the total withdrawal of access to healthcare outside of this research trial may breach “the fundamental ethical principles governing research”

Right to the highest attainable standard of health and access to healthcare for LGBTI people in Europe

I share concerns of experts at the Council of Europe that removing access to #PubertyBlockers except through clinical trials may breach “fundamental ethical principles governing research”, amounting to coercion and a breach of young people's human rights. I asked Wes Streeting about this today... 🧵
