Once you understand the corporate culture of AI hyperscalers is everyone cooking their brains by locking themselves in the bathroom, holding flashlights under their chins, and saying "Aaaaaaaaaay Eyeeeeeee" until they wet themselves in terror, things snap into focus: pluralistic.net/2023/06/04/a...

So rather than increase faculty payroll and lower student:teacher ratios, UMass would rather spend it on Claude. I would argue that a better investment would be hiring 100-200 tenure-line faculty.
According to a meeting I was in, UMass estimates that if the capacity of these tools were maxed out by student, faculty, staff users, the total cost to the university would be $130,000/day, or about $47 million / year.
Neuronal response properties in the songbird auditory system change when they become parents, tuned more to chick calls! Such a fun study from @prolactingrl.bsky.social in the JNE Special Issue on Parenting. Expect great things from her new lab at UMichigan!
I'm excited to share that my postdoc paper from the @healeylab.bsky.social lab was published today! Here we show that zebra finch parents have stronger auditory responses to chick calls compared to non-parents and that females tend to be more selective in these responses! Also~my 1st ephys paper!! ⬇️
Couple of pieces that we've published today, in addition to America's Compact for Higher Education. The first is from @jeremymberg.bsky.social, with an analysis of words removed from NIH grants. Spoiler: looks like the NIH testimony about there not being a banned words list doesn't hold up.

I’m on the faculty job market this fall! 🐦🧠 I’m an NIH K99/R00 awardee studying how the brain learns complex skills, using birdsong to connect molecules, synapses, circuits, behavior & computation. Know of a search where I might fit? Please send it my way & share!

#NewPaperOut Here's a puzzle: when a songbird hears the same song repeatedly, its neurons adapt; they respond less and less to that song. But what's the network doing during that adaptation? How do excitatory and inhibitory neurons participate as a collective?

🐦🧬 What does it take to complete the genome of a songbird? The Vertebrate Genomes Project has produced the first complete, fully phased reference genome of the zebra finch (𝘛𝘢𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘱𝘺𝘨𝘪𝘢 𝘨𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘢). Getting there took more than simply generating more sequence. #T2T #VGP #Genomics #GenomeAssembly
Night eyes 😎 Finally got proper pictures of this amazing phenomenon! Mantises change their eye color (and light sensitivity) at night by transporting pigments from the surface of each compound eye unit toward the deeper eye region. Same female Tenodera sinensis, two different times. #bugsky
Some say he’s the natural successor to Audubon. That his illustrations bring jealous tears to Sibley’s eyes. Well… I don’t know about all that. All I know is he’s Extremely Accurate™️. Bravo, @tommysiegel.bsky.social. 👏

This may dramatically slow down the attacks on science. It also provides a template for how to prevent the federal government from becoming a patronage state. It’s a big deal!
