Just heard two things but I'm not sure they are true: Having "one for the road" came from the practice of condemned prisoners stopping at tavern enroute to the gallows. And a "hangover" referred to the sore heads of the spectators after boozing it up at hangings.

Wants to know what you had for dinner.
Has anyone experience of custom foot orthotics? I had a digital test today and the spiel sounded convincing but £380 for two bits of plastic 😬. Please feel free to share, this is a bit niche!
Look at my friend Fi! Sunk in deepest gloom and misery.
And now 😻
Well. I’m a spoon and didn’t know about this! On weekends we can travel by bus ALL DAY for just £1.75. Ends on Bank Holiday.
Four weekends in and the Weekend Hopper has made a real difference 🐸 So far, 4.2 million Londoners have saved around £9 million in total, with around half of all bus and tram users benefitting. Just two weekends to go. Don’t miss your chance to hop on board.
Hello gardening friends! Do you think these hotter summers might mean we can grown coriander directly in the ground now? This is my herbal fantasy.
Finally enough dahlias flowering at once to pick some. I love them so much.
We are off to Syracuse in Sicily in November? Anyone been? All tips - day trips, restaurants, food shopping - gratefully received. We have an apartment with a decent kitchen and have 5 full days there.
When you're in the family business, but the family business is "plangent gloom".
Grainger Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, painting by Leeds artist Louis Hubbard Grimshaw (1870-944), son of John Atkinson Grimshaw.
I'm not happy about this El Nino news meaning a wildly wet autumn/winter and then the hottest ever summer next year. I mean, FOR GOD'S SAKE.
Slept brilliantly well from 10-7.45. Which means I will be a menace all day.
Is anyone watching A House Through Time, the Edinburgh one? Think I'm gonna start it tonight.
Did you know Marco Polo set off on his travels when he was only 17? Medieval teens were TOUGH.
What’s everyone having for dinner? I’m baking some mince in a very hot oven so it’s a bit crispy, serving over half a baked aubergine. Meat will be in a soy/garlic/ginger/chilli etc situation because Chinese is what I’m loving atm. Rest of the morning glory and some tomatoes. Glass of white wine.
Wish we could still get this sort of beachwear. Imagine popping this over your swimsuit to avoid sunburn, or drift off to lunch.
This week's #ThirtiesThursday garment is ready for a day in the sun! This two-piece ivory silk pair of beach pyjamas features a vibrant Art Deco border print of orange, blue and black flowers. I particularly love the matching bag! Sold by Augusta Auctions. #fashionhistory
I think that London poll is showing a general sense that 'everything is shit' and I'll bet numbers would be even worse elsewhere. Also my guess is more people were polled successfully in the outer boroughs where people are definitely way moanier and more conservative.
I needed a tie breaker for the pub quiz last night as two teams finished with 22/25. We played a simply thrilling game of guess the weight of the potato. When I tell you I've never seen a more excitable pub in my life. Even teams who had lost wanted to have a go. Ten minutes of solid potato hefting
What’s everyone having for dinner? I’m knackered so it’s some Buldak spicy chicken noodles, topped with V crunchy oven baked chicken tenders and morning glory. Going to make a spicy sauce stolen from @perilmild.bsky.social involving yog, hot sauce, lime, chilli crisp, spring onions and STUFF.
Hooting with laughter at this guy. But maybe I shouldn’t as I’m stupid.
Started to read something about Trump. But then I remembered I’m not American, cannot vote there, and unless he’s firing weaponry directly at Europe I’m not v interested. We don’t have to follow US news. But our press and social media really wants to make us feel we do.
@eyfsclaire.bsky.social You might like? x
While we are on a music kick, lets listen to what ancient Persia sounded like around 1400 BC? Sarah Parsaei performs on the Arjan harp — a historic instrument with roots going back nearly 3,400 years — in Tehran, Iran. #globalmuseum #music #Persian #musicalinstruments #history
Two guesses saying “during the Industrial Revolution” but I bet if I’d asked opinions on when it began I’d have had a span of 50-odd years. Anyway, term coined in 1848 (by John Stuart Mill)
No peeking: but when do you think the term The Industrial Revolution was coined?

This is okaaaay, but not a patch of Melvyn Bragg’s chapters on the same subject. William Tyndale, the English bible and his flexible and wildly creative approach to language. Only 30 mins and warrants a series really. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...
