The University Challenge subreddit has not yet started its discussion post so I cannot complain about how basic tonight’s Stoppard questions were
Website: ENTER DATE --/--/-- Me: 1-/--/-- Website: NO THAT ISN'T A DATE Me: 19/--/-- Website: NO, YOU BASTARD. WHY ARE YOU TYPING ONE DIGIT AT A TIME? SCUM. Me: ok I'll use the drop down Website: FIRST, SELECT A YEAR. IS THE DATE IN THE 2020s? Me: no, it's Website: NO, THAT ISN'T A DATE
Sometimes I browse through heritage auctions and I find the occasional odd gem, but today I stumbled upon the mother-load: these ridiculous grocery store ads promoting the release of The Jungle Book, and each one has me absolutely reeling. Sharing them here so you too can share in my bewildered joy
Things I was frightened of as a child: Evil Edna, the witch-television from Willo the Wisp Quite a lot of Red Dwarf, particularly series V Dinosaurs (I didn’t watch Jurassic Park until I was THIRTY ONE) Dad’s best friend Les and his enormous moustache Having to interact with other children
Things I was frightened of as a child: The witch from Granny's Garden A particular pedestrian bridge in York The big vat of acid in Transformers The Movie I can't think of any others but there must have been some
I’ve been round to a neighbour four times now to try and retrieve a parcel that was delivered to the wrong street. I’ve gone daytime, evenings, weekends. I’ve rung the bell. I’ve hammered on the door. The upstairs window is open and I can hear them talking. They will not answer. I despise them.
Thing is though she says her school was dismissed at noon, but 9/11 happened at 2pm UK time and she is from Glasgow. If she was dismissed at noon, the school were in on the plot. Unless of course she went to school on an island in the middle of the Atlantic.
A helpful key here for understanding what wingnuttery is and how it works, here. I 100% guarantee you this did not happen and that the boys she’s talking about - she later clarified they were “Pakistani” - do not exist. And yet, I can also assure you Eve is *absolutely convinced* she saw this.
A heads-up for those with access: this dazzling masterpiece is on the BBC iPlayer from today
DELIGHTED to learn that Taskmaster filmed at the London Museum of Water and Steam, a Brentford gem, which is approximately equidistant between my house and the Taskmaster house (about a 20 minute walk in either direction)
god I would LOVE THIS but also I was on Pointless once, crashed out and then never watched Pointless again and I don’t think I could handle never seeing Only Connect again
Do you like quizzes? Do you like industrial estates in Cardiff? Do you like being tortured by questions? Do you like a labyrinthine format where no-one goes home? Do you fancy seeing me scuttle shiftily around the studio? Then apply for the next series of Only Connect! www.bbc.co.uk/showsandtour...
I love that this ever-so-slightly oppressive signage make it looks like Britain is living under the authoritarian dominion of Judy Garland’s brutal regime:
The Dominion Theatre at Tottenham Court Road in London, 1957
Discworld QOTD, from Small Gods “Fear is a strange soil. It grows obedience like corn, which grow in straight lines to make weeding easier. But sometimes it grows the potatoes of defiance, which flourish underground.”
Discworld QOTD, from I Shall Wear Midnight “Oh, I feel very angry a lot of the time," said Tiffany, "but I just put it away somewhere until I can do something useful with it.”
Found the extension lead from the bedroom in the kitchen and P explained that he had to clean it because one of the cats yakked up a hairball on it from a great height
"The economy is great, you're just complaining about vibes. Anyway, the charts say crime is down, but my vibes say it's not, we need to take my hysteria over seeing poor people and youths seriously."
As murder rates plummet to a 20-year low, why are so many American cities still grappling with disorder? In @themimsshow.bsky.social, Carine Hajjar sits down with Heather Mac Donald to explore “teen takeovers,” pushback against progressive prosecutors and more.
I think I noted during the recent Belfast riots that a certain kind of man is not really interested in protecting women & girls; he's interested in protecting the exclusive right of his kind of man to abuse and control women and girls.
Men will send me emails like this and then go rampaging on the streets of Dover and Portsmouth claiming they want to keep refugees out in order to “PROTECT OUR WOMEN!” Not a single one of the young male refugees I’ve worked with has ever spoken to me with such violent misogyny.
My first experience of Maxwell’s Silver Hammer was this version sung by a 78-year-old Jessica Mitford

I had been a long day but I was going to go and buy reward chocolate on my way home but the bus was on diversion and a lady was confused and I got off the bus early to walk her to where she was meant to be going and I do feel very virtuous and helpful but man I wish I had some chocolate
Everybody thinks 'https://' stands for 'hypertext transfer protocol secure' but it actually stands for 'head to this place, sucka' followed by a colon and two laser sounds
Need to remind myself how to do a time step by this evening but I am either on a tube, in a flat, or in sandals. Am aggressively reciting bounce hop step fa-lap step in the hope that this is somehow enough.
This has reminded me of a similar issue at work. There is a local area called Queen’s Park. The Westminster ward covering this area is called Queen’s Park. Our ward covering this area is called Queens Park. There has been no apostrophe since 1964 and I have begun the campaign to see it inserted
my hot by-election take is that 'holborn and st pancras' is an absolutely ridiculous name for this subsection of london
hello my baby hello my honey hello darkness my old friend
