This came in the mail today! I was going to read it outside with the (leashed) cat, but now it is raining, so reading will have to wait until it rains hard enough for the cat to go in.

Disappointing grant news today--a big collaborative project I'd proposed to get more apple samples in for genetic fingerprinting was not invited to the full proposal stage. But the reviewer feedback was actually quite positive, and writing it helped me connect with more community apple projects.

I don't think these things are actually apocalypse machines, but I do think they're dangerous, and that a considerable part of the danger stems from the fact that the people building them seem to think they're constructing apocalypse machines.

It's a shame to be incredibly lactose intolerant in the best pizza city in the USA but I just had an incredible vegan ramen made with chestnuts instead and it was amazing

The US already got a do over. A mulligan. A second chance. Much of the world, especially US allies, were ready to write off Trump’s first term as a fluke. The American people’s choice to put him back in power—as a convicted felon, after an openly bigoted, anti-democracy campaign—showed it was not.

This is the part many Americans -- including the Bezosites at the Washington Post -- don't understand. Canadians don't see this just as a Trump thing. It's that America elected him twice, and the second time with an even bigger mandate. The problem we're addressing is America, not Trump.

Our local community kitchen used some of their government grant to hire a Spanish interpreter specifically to help local families get their permits for selling food including at the farmers market, and there are now at least 4 food stands that make me feel like this open every Saturday!

It pains me to see adaptation used to undermine mitigation, but also to see it painted as a "false solution." Adaptation is harm reduction for climate impacts that can no longer be avoided. Climate justice demands it. AND it has limits, becoming less effective and more costly as warming proceeds.
