Today prosecutors filed a declaration of intent to indict Artem Kirpichenok. The charges—possibly espionage—will be revealed Friday. House arrest was denied. His lawyer saw him led into court bent double, shackled hand and foot: “In ten years, I have never seen anything like it.”
After three weeks in Shin Bet custody, Artyom Kirpichenok was finally allowed to see a lawyer. She reports 18–24-hour interrogations, sleep deprivation and constant light. No charges have been disclosed. He is alive, holding on—and knows he has not been forgotten.

This is exactly how fear works as a tool of state control — when people simply vanish with no way to learn their fate, and it starts to feel normal.
Why do societies go mad? What happens that makes people — otherwise living ordinary lives: raising kids, caring for pets, looking after aging parents — arrive at a state where routine cruelty toward others becomes not just normal, but pleasurable?

Artyom Kirpichenok is a historian currently held by Israel’s Shin Bet. I wrote about his case under the title “They Are Coming for the Penguins.” And now a friend sends me this: “This penguin is not a communist.” Sometimes reality insists on completing the metaphor.
These mainstream pundits—including former Israeli military intelligence official @citrinowicz—are saying exactly what arrested historian Artyom Kirpichenok said. So why not put them in Shin Bet custody too—or, better still, instead of Artyom? youtu.be/IhZtYIRsUkY?...
