I'm really glad to see folks outside of my nerdy corner of the world highlighting the way Trump may be using Venezuela to create a self-funding Pentagon. Trump's effort flies in the face of the key reason Congress has the power of the purse -- to keep the executive from self-funding the military.

NEW: The US theft of Venezuelan oil resources appears to bring the Pentagon its own source of money — something that should be understood as another milestone in the collapse of constitutional government.

It is, today, 115 years since navy surgeon and Antarctic explorer George Murray Levick saw his first Adélie penguin, after which he wrote several pages of notes about their sexual habits, concluded “there seems to be no crime too low for these penguins”, and saw his findings suppressed for 97 years

😬 Katie Zacharia's first press briefing was brutally bad 😬 Trump managed to find a press secretary who can barely read, but she does have the number one qualification -- looking like Ivanka Here's a supercut from Zacharia's first briefing, which made Karoline Leavitt seem like Ronald Reagan

OTD 50 yrs ago, Gen. Paul Tibbets (USAF, ret.) re-enacted the bombing of Hiroshima he led on August 6, 1945, at an air show sponsored by the private Confederate Air Force in Harlingen, Texas. As Tibbets flew a B-29 overhead, conventional explosives were detonated on the ground to simulate the bomb.

Today in 1957, workers at the Windscale Piles in Cumberland on England’s northwest coast, where two air-cooled, graphite-moderated reactors were producing plutonium for the United Kingdom’s nuclear stockpile, discovered Pile No. 1 was on fire. This was the United Kingdom’s worst nuclear accident.

A black and white ground-level photograph of the Windscale Piles, including the two prominent and tall chimneys (one for each reactor). The large, square protrusions near the top of each chimney were known, until the fire, as Cockcroft’s Folly, after physicist John Cockcroft who, as director of the Atomic Energy Research Establishment, insisted (following the recommendation of fellow physicist Terence Price) that high-performance air filters be installed in the chimneys to prevent deadly radioactive particles from escaping into the atmosphere in case an aluminum-clad uranium fuel cartridge should rupture during routine operations and catch fire.

Ossoff: "They've unleashed federal agents to kill Americans on the streets of our cities with impunity. That's Mike Collins's immigration policy. And that's what you'd expect from the bigot congressman who called for executed immigrants by throwing to their deaths out of helicopters."
