Wild animals are ready for Seattle's expansion of recognition of sexual orientations and family structures. A friend just saw a throuple of squirrels building a nest together in the tree outside his window.

Salmon 🐟

We were told that “breeders”, which refers to spawning salmon, is also a term gay ppl use to refer to straight ppl, for example when “lamenting about something straight ppl do.” This led us to wonder whether salmon are really all straight. We’re not sure the answer BUT they can certainly be trans!

I hope y'all are starting to realize that every year from October to November, you need to completely block off your calendars for salmon-related activities and celebrations. Go ahead and do it now for every year for the rest of the your life or just go to 2200 for good measure

A salmon related event I cannot attend but that I recommend is from 11:00-2:00 on October 17th at the Tukwila Community Center called Salmon Saturday! Run by the Environmental Science Center this free all ages friendly event explores salmon and how they engage with our local waterways!

We know what we need to do to recover salmon. Locally on the Cedar River (CR), restoration projects like Rainbow Bend and River Bend make a huge difference. Healthy juvenile salmon habitat is a big factor for CR salmon. In just 2 yrs after Rainbow Bend was done, baby Chinook at the site DOUBLED.

There are a lot of amazing & hopeful environmental restoration successes out there & it’s my duty to remind u that none of them involve stopping dense infill housing. We really know how to fix things. We just need everyone to understand what we really need to do & scream louder than the orca NIMBYs

Take a quick bus trip with us down to Renton to see salmon spawning in the Cedar River! In addition to hosting one of the biggest salmon runs in the lower 48, the Cedar River is also the City of Seattle's primary source of drinking water. Come learn more about where we get our drinking water🚰⛲💧

This is why @ecocityaction.org believes making northwest cities more walkable and bikeable/improving public transit infrastructure is crucial for supporting salmon AND humans!

Everything makes sense once you realize all environmental organizations in the US are people who want the thing on the left but only for boomers.

1. Drive less! Prioritize taking transit, walking, biking, or other more whimsical forms of moving 2. Volunteer to do habitats restoration 3. Advocate for denser cities, better transit, daylighting of rivers, salmon recovery funding, tribal fishing rights, and better fish passage

For instance, during a break in the proceedings between learning about salmon & learning about beavers, you might look at some tube worms under the water. Not great photos because they were small and I was on my belly on a floating dock at Golden Gardens trying not to drop my phone in the water!

This is one of the coolest things I've ever witnessed. Come join us at the next @ecocityaction.org event. Who knows what you might see??
